Gehweiler is a district of the Wadrilltal district of the city of Wadern in the Merzig-Wadern district in Saarland .

geography

Gehweiler is located in the Black Forest high forest . The place is located about 3 km north of the central town of Wadern. State road 150 leads through the village from Wadern to Grimburg ( Rhineland-Palatinate ). Gehweiler is located on the course of the Wadrill at the foot of a sloping mountain slope, along the so-called wine route, a traffic connection that served the transfer between the Moselle and the Saar in prehistoric times.

history

The first documentary mention of Gehweiler can be found in a document from 1248. The name "Gewilre" is mentioned in numerous documents from the 13th century. The documents refer to the noble family from Gehweiler.

After the place was under the rule of the lords of Dagstuhl for many years , the chronicle mentions twelve free stick farmers in the 17th century . After the Congress of Vienna (1815) the place was within the circle Merzig in Trier under Prussian administration. The municipality of Gehweiler was assigned to the mayor's office in Wadern .

The separation of the Saar area from the German Reich on the basis of the Versailles Treaty in 1919 led to the formation of the remaining Merzig-Wadern district , which continued to belong to the Trier administrative district and the Rhine province .

After the Second World War , Gehweiler became part of the French occupation zone in July 1945 . On July 18, 1946, the French military government under General Kœnig issued the “ Order regarding the connection of municipalities to the administration of the Saar area”. Since then Gehweiler has belonged to the separated Saarland .

As part of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland , the previously independent municipality of Gehweiler was dissolved on January 1, 1974 and assigned to the new municipality, from 1978 city of Wadern.

According to a public survey in 2017, the place was united with Reidelbach and Wadrill to form the Wadrilltal district in 2019.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was designed by Dittmar Lauer ( Kell am See ): The shield, divided horizontally by a silver wave bar , shows a golden mill wheel in green in the lower part of the coat of arms ; in the half-divided upper part on the left a black St. Andrew's cross in gold and on the right a crusader figure with a sword in blue, which represents the so-called grass man stolen from the chapel. The silver wave bar stands for the water-rich Wadrill . The different mills (fulling mill, grinding mill, oil and saw mills) are represented by the mill wheel. The St. Andrew's cross indicates the lordship. Gehweiler belonged to the high court of Wadern, which together with the high court of Schwarzenberg formed the basis of the Dagstuhl rule, which in turn is a branch of the noble lords of Saarbrücken , who carried the black St. Andrew's cross on a golden background as their coat of arms. The crusader figure symbolizes King Ludwig X. (1219–1270).

Culture and sights

Gehweiler belongs to the parish of Wadrill. The Ludwig Chapel, built in 1746 in the town center, and a crossroad from 1788 are worth seeing . Both are listed as architectural monuments . Some well-preserved farmhouses of the former stick farmers line both sides of the main street in the village.
