Georg Wilhelm von Lettow

Georg Wilhelm von Lettow (born January 12, 1762 in Forst in Niederlausitz, † May 8, 1842 in Stargard in Pomerania ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and most recently the commander of the 4th Infantry Brigade .

Life

His parents were General Heinrich Wilhelm von Lettow (1714–1791) and his wife Friederike, née von Podewils .

Military career

Lettow came to Stolp as a cadet on May 16, 1773 and then to Berlin on April 28, 1775. On March 2, 1778 he was then employed as a portepeef ensign in the "Lettow" infantry regiment of the Prussian army . As such, he took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778/79 . By February 2, 1787 Lettow was promoted to second lieutenant . In the campaign in Poland in 1794/95 he fought in battle near Wraclawek. On September 16, 1797, he joined the 50th Infantry Regiment as a staff captain . There on December 24, 1805 he became a captain and company commander . In the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the Battle of Jena and in the battles near Rödichen and Boitzenburg.

After the Treaty of Tilsit , he first joined the Reserve National Battalion “von Hahn”, and on February 17, 1809 he was in the 1st Silesian Infantry Regiment. On March 23, 1811 he became company commander in the 2nd West Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 7. There he became a major on February 3, 1812 and then fought in 1812 in the battles at Eckau, Schlackhof and Garossenkrug. For this he received the order Pour le Mérite on October 30, 1812 . On March 26, 1813, he was transferred to the 1st Littauische Reserve Füselier Battalion as a commander, and on July 1, 1813, he was appointed commander of the 1st Silesian Infantry Regiment (No. 10). On July 11, 1813, he received the Iron Cross, 2nd class.

During the Wars of Liberation he fought in the battle near Luckau , the battles near Großgörschen , Dresden , Kulm and the siege of Erfurt (1813) , the battles near Leipzig , Vauchamps , Laon , Paris and Belle Alliance . For Leipzig he received the Iron Cross First Class. At Belle Alliance he was wounded and received the Order of St. Vladimir III. Class. On December 8, 1813 he was appointed lieutenant colonel and on December 27, 1813 with the command of the 1st Silesian Infantry Regiment (No. 10). He was appointed regimental commander on August 24, 1814.

On March 17, 1815, he received the Russian Order of St. Anne, 2nd class, and on April 30, 1815, he was promoted to colonel with a patent from May 21, 1815. On March 14, 1815, he was ad interim brigade commander in the IV Army Corps, on January 5, 1816 he joined the Mobile Army Corps in France in the same capacity, and on December 10, 1816 he was awarded the Russian Order of St. Anne, 1st Class. On June 9, 1817 he was appointed brigade commander, and on August 13, 1817 he was awarded the French Legion of Honor .

On September 5, 1818, he was transferred to the 6th Infantry Brigade as commander and promoted to major general on March 30, 1820 with a patent from April 19, 1820 . This was followed by a position as commander of the 4th Infantry Brigade from August 3, 1820. But he got into financial difficulties, which the king found out, who then gave him 500 thalers. Lettow received the service cross on July 26, 1825 and to celebrate his 50th anniversary in service on March 1, 1828, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. On March 27, 1830, he got his farewell as a lieutenant general with an annual pension of 2700 thalers. He died on May 8, 1842 in Stargard in Pomerania and was buried there on May 11, 1842.

family

Lettow married on May 4, 1793 in Berlin Christiane Friederike Karoline Luise von Poellnitz (* 1773; † April 23, 1809) divorced von Proeck . The couple had several children:

After the death of his first wife, he married on February 10, 1812 in Neisse Marie Magdalene Jordan (* 1776, † May 4, 1820), widow of the regimental surgeon Seydel.
