George of Austria
George of Austria (* 1504 in Ghent ; † May 4, 1557 in Liège ) was a Catholic archbishop .
Georg was the illegitimate son of Emperor Maximilian I and Margareta von Edelsheim and grew up with Charles V in the Netherlands with his half-sister Margarete . Margarete obtained dispensation from the Pope for his illegitimate birth and made sure that George received church benefices early on. In 1526 he became Bishop of Brixen . Later he moved to the episcopal see in Valencia (1538) and Liège (1544). George's church and foreign policy followed the imperial line, as the Liège bishop he was concerned about the welfare of his subjects.
He had three children: Georg became a priest († 1619), Margarete became Abbess of Charleroi († 1604) and Maria († after 1589).
