Johann Thomas von Spaur (* 1528 at Spaur Castle in Val di Non , Trentino-South Tyrol , † February 25, 1591 in Brixen ), was the Roman Catholic Prince-Bishop of Brixen .

Life

The son of Captain Ulrich Freiherr von Spaur and Katharina von Madrutz ( Italian Madruzzo ) was intended by his mother for the career of a cleric and she sent him to her brother Cristoforo Madruzzo , who was Prince-Bishop of Trento and Bressanone, in the cathedral school. The uncle was very committed to his nephew. He was allowed to accompany him, who was created cardinal in 1543, to the Reichstag in Augsburg in 1550 . In 1551 he became provost of the cathedral in Brixen and was then transferred to other offices.

In 1565 Pope Pius IV confirmed his appointment as coadjutor of his uncle. In 1578 he succeeded him as Prince-Bishop of Brixen. He was considered a great art patron . Velthurns Castle , which his uncle had begun shortly before his death, was built on his behalf . The interior is an impressive work of the late Renaissance . It was used as the summer residence of the prince-bishops of Brixen until 1803. For his predecessor Christoph Fuchs von Fuchsberg , he had the tomb commissioned by his uncle completed and erected in the cathedral cloister in 1580 .

His younger brother Christoph Andreas von Spaur (1543–1613) also became a cleric. He was Bishop of Gurk from 1573 to 1603 and Prince-Bishop of Brixen from 1601 to 1613.

Both were buried in the crypt of the Brixen Cathedral .
