Bernhard Galura (born August 21, 1764 as Bernhard Katzenschwanz in Herbolzheim ; † May 17, 1856 in Brixen ) was a Catholic priest of high ecclesiastical dignitaries, most recently Prince-Bishop of the Diocese of Brixen .

Life

Galura, son of an innkeeper and farmer, entered the Minorite monastery in Breisach after completing high school in Villingen . Because the monastery was dissolved during the abolition of the monastery under Habsburg rule under Emperor Josef II , he entered the Freiburg general seminary in 1783 to study theology. He graduated with a doctorate in theology. For practical theological training he switched to the general seminary in Vienna in 1787, where he was ordained a priest on July 27, 1788. He then returned to the theological seminary in Freiburg as a lecturer. In 1791 he became pastor in Altoberndorf and in the same year pastor at Freiburg Cathedral , which at that time was not yet a bishop's church (until 1805). Emperor Franz I appointed him titular dome of Linz and appointed him in 1805 as a clergyman in Günzburg an der Donau. When the Habsburgs had lost all of the Upper Austrian lands in 1806, Galura returned to what is now Breisgau in Baden and in 1808 became a clergyman of Baden. From 1810 to 1815 he was pastor at St. Martin's Church in Freiburg . In 1815 Emperor Franz appointed him to the government council and spiritual adviser in Innsbruck . In 1818 he became vicar general of the Brixen prince-bishop for Feldkirch in Vorarlberg. On January 30, 1820 he was ordained bishop with the titular bishopric of Anthedon and installed as auxiliary bishop in Feldkirch. From April 7, 1829 until his death at the age of 92, he was Prince Bishop of Brixen.

Galura was also socially committed and was a respected personality in political circles. In his homeland, Baden since 1805, he was awarded the Baden Order of the Zähringer Lion . In addition, he received several Austrian awards and honors. He was appointed honorary president of the "Paris Association for the Outlawing of the Slave Trade" (Association for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, Abolition Society).

Works

Galura wrote several writings, for example on the "Socratic Catechism Method" (2nd edition 1796). The "Textbook of Christian Well-Being" was also published several times. He also used the works of Protestant writers for his theological writings, such as Sturm's reflections on the works of God in the kingdom of nature and providence, edited for Catholic Christians (1813, 2 vols., 2nd ed.). The main literary work is his Latest Theology of Christianity (1800 ff., 6 vol.), In which the biblical idea of the kingdom of God is at the center.
