Georg von Alten (born November 30, 1875 in Altona , † September 5, 1950 in Schelenburg ) was a German officer , most recently major general in World War II .

Life

Georg came from the Lower Saxon noble family von Alten .

Coming from the cadet corps, he was transferred to the 2nd Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Dragoon Regiment No. 18 of the Prussian Army in Parchim on March 22, 1895 as a characterized ensign . Obtained the patent for his rank in mid-October 1895 and advanced to first lieutenant by mid-September 1906 . After the outbreak of the First World War , Alten took part in the fighting on the Western Front with this regiment, and from the end of September to the end of December 1914 he was in the reserve reserve squadron of the XIII. In this position he received both classes of the Iron Cross , the Knight's Cross First Class of the Frederick Order and on October 5, 1915 the Knight's Cross of the Württemberg Military Merit Order . At the end of the war, Alten Major was in command at the special disposal of the Governor General Warsaw for use with the staff of the Lodz Military Government.

On December 7, 1918, he was transferred back to the "König" (2nd Württembergisches) No. 26 Dragoon Regiment and, after demobilization, on October 1, 1919, he was transferred to the newly founded Reichswehr . Alten initially worked for the staff of the 14th Reiter Regiment , was appointed regiment commander on July 1, 1923, and in this position was promoted to lieutenant colonel on November 1, 1923 . He then served from February 1, 1928 until his retirement on September 30, 1929 as the commandant of Hanover . In this post he was promoted to colonel on November 1, 1928 .

Shortly before the start of the Second World War , Alten was made available to the Army of the Wehrmacht on August 26, 1939. From September 1939 to May 16, 1940, he was in command of the prisoner-of-war team main camp Stalag XI B (357) in Fallingbostel . He was then commander of the prisoner-of-war camps in Norway until June 1940 and then seconded to the military administration in France until September 14, 1940 .
