Gerolzahn is a district of Walldürn in the Neckar-Odenwald district in Baden-Württemberg . The nearby Kummershof homestead and the abandoned Gerolzahn train station residential area also belong to the former municipality of Gerolzahn.

Geographical location

Gerolzahn is about six kilometers northwest of the city center above the Marsbach valley , in which the federal road 47 and the Seckach – Miltenberg railway ("Madonnenlandbahn") run. The Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park includes parts of the district.

history

About one kilometer east of today's location, the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes ran in an almost dead straight line from northwest to southeast. Remains of the small fort Haselburg , between Gerolzahn and Reinhardsachsen , and former Roman guard posts are hidden in the ground there, but largely destroyed.

The place name, which developed from "Gerolzhain" (Hain des Gerold) to "Gerolzahn", goes back to a certain Gerold, who is said to have been the founder. In 1395 the place was first mentioned in a document as "Gerolezahn". After it was owned by the von Dürn family until 1590, the village was sold to the Würzburg monastery in 1677 by the von Gaisberg family . At that time there was still a castle ("Hof von Gerolzahn"), which today is only indicated by a spiral staircase and the year 1575 at a cellar entrance.

In 1803 Gerolzahn came to the Principality of Leiningen as part of the secularization , then in 1806 to the Grand Duchy of Baden .

Until 1935, Neusaß belonged to Gerolzahn. From 1935 to 1945 Gerolzahn belonged to the community of Glashofen . Then it was independent again. On January 1, 1975, it was incorporated into Walldürn.

Former coat of arms

On September 11, 1958, the Ministry of the Interior issued a coat of arms based on a motif from 1909. "In silver (white) a fire-breathing blue dragon striding to the left." The coat of arms expired on January 1, 1975 when it was incorporated into Walldürn.
