Get Real is a film directed by Simon Shore and shot in England in 1998. Patrick Wilde wrote the script based on his play What's Wrong with Angry? .
action
Sixteen-year-old Steven Carter is gay, he has known that since he was eleven. That's a real problem in his provincial hometown. Until now only his best friend Linda knew about it. This supports him with his coming out . It happens after Steven falls in love with John Dixon, the beautiful boy at school, and, to everyone's surprise, his feelings are reciprocated. However, since John wants to maintain the macho facade, all meetings must remain secret. Steven can't take it any longer. First, he anonymously submits an article about the problems of homosexual youth to the school newspaper. Later he comes out to the whole school during an award ceremony. Since John cannot jump over his shadow, it means the end of the relationship between the two.
backgrounds
"Get Real" was filmed in the British city of Basingstoke . In August 1998 it was first seen at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, but it was not released in the UK until May 14, 1999. On October 14, 1999, the film had its German premiere.
The German distribution title “Von Mann zu Mann” occasionally led to confusion in Germany with a gay television production of the same name, the erotic soap Von Mann zu Mann by Andreas Weiß .
Reviews
After Rotten Tomatoes, the reviews were mostly positive. Entertainment Weekly voted him 34th for Best High School Movies in 2005.
- Roger Ebert : Certainly this film has deeper values than the mainstream teenage comedies that retail aggressive materialism, soft-core sex and shallow ideas about "popularity." .
- Lexicon of international film : A melancholy-romantic comedy that advocates courage and tolerance, but is a bit thick pedagogically and makes use of a number of clichés.
- Prisma Online: Thanks to good actors and a stringent, sensitive staging, the result was an acceptable film about a coming out.
