Birmingham is a city in Oakland County , Michigan , United States . Birmingham is an affluent suburb of Detroit , with a pedestrian-friendly and beautifully landscaped downtown area that draws strollers from all over the area. According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of ​​12.4 km² with 19,291 inhabitants in 2000.

Michigan Highway 1 (Woodward Ave) connects Birmingham as a dead straight road with Detroit, some 20 km away. In Birmingham itself a branch line was built as early as 1939, so that "Old Woodward" could be built in what is now the city center with restaurants, shops and cinemas.
