The Ghanaian Football Championship 2019 was held between March 31 and June 23, 2019 under the name " Ghana Football Association (GFA) Normalization Committee (NC) Special Competition Tier I". After football activities across the country had ceased in June 2018, a replacement competition for the Ghana Premier League was created when the championship was held.
As a result of the investigative documentary Number 12: When Greed and Corruption Become the Norm by Anas Aremeyaw Anas , which was broadcast on June 6, 2018, all football activities in Ghana were suspended during the current season . Contrary to media reports to the contrary, the Ghana Football Association was not dissolved; Instead, the world football association FIFA set up a "Normalization Committee" at the end of August 2018, which is to work on reorganizing the national football association by September 30, 2019.
After the third attempt by the normalization committee to revive Ghanaian club football failed in mid-February 2019, the “Special Competition” started at the end of March with the 16 clubs of the Ghana Premier League and the 48 clubs of the previous year's One League division . The first division clubs were geographically divided into a north and a south group with eight teams each, the two best-placed teams in each group qualified for the final round, which was played in the knockout system ; The winner of the Asante Kotoko SC competition will take part in the 2019/20 CAF Champions League as a Ghanaian representative .
Participating teams
A week before the start of the group stage, Wa All Stars FC announced that they would not take part in the competition, so Zone A was played with only seven teams. The MEDEAMA SC had first announced his non-participation, agreed to a participation because of the great importance of the "Special Competition" for the Ghanaian football to the end.
The group stage was played as a double round tournament in both zones ; the direct comparison served as a placement criterion in the event of a tie . The four best-placed teams in both zones qualified for the “Ghana Football Association Normalization Committee Special Competition Tier II” cup competition .
The first place in one zone was entitled to home rights in the semifinals against the second place in the other zone. On May 26, Karela United FC was the last club to qualify for the final round.
