Education

Gianin Conrad was born and raised in Chur. He lives and works in Zurich , Chur and Domat / Ems . 1995–1999 training as a stone sculptor in Chur. 2001–2002 preliminary course at the University of Design and Art , Zurich. 2002–2006 studied fine arts at the University of Art and Design, Zurich. 2005–2006 study exchange at the University of the Arts (UdK), Berlin , in the class of Christiane Möbus . 2010 Master of Arts in Art in Public Spheres at the University of Lucerne . 2012 Master of Fine Arts, FHNW at the University of Art and Design in Basel . While still studying, Gianin Conrad received sponsorship awards - for example from the city of Chur and the canton of Graubünden, as well as several grants. From 2009 he has been awarded studio scholarships on a regular basis, including by the cantons of St. Gallen and Graubünden . Since 2006 exhibitions at home and abroad. Solo exhibitions in the Kunsthalle Winterthur , the Kunsthalle Wil , the Kunstraum LLLLLL, Vienna , and the Engländerbau Vaduz .

Gianin Conrad works in various media. His work includes sculpture, sculpture, installation and performance. The trained stone sculptor repeatedly deals with fundamental topics of his discipline: space, form and its negative, the hollow form, whereby the question of the possibilities of today's sculpture is always at the center. The history of sculpture and the confrontation with the human form that goes with it are important points of reference. An example is the work Liegende from 2015, which consists of a structure of pink-painted branches that have been jumbled together. Another central aspect of Gianin Conrad's artistic work is the preoccupation with the material: In addition to design characteristics, he is particularly interested in the philosophical aspect of the relationship between material and artistic value and their social evaluation. Again and again he uses found materials, which he presents in a different context: Examples are the reliefs made from different colored, different sized pieces of folding rule, which pay homage to antiquity and the origin of Western culture ( Götterdämmerung , 2013) or the work AusSicht von 2014 with the colorful, live electric fence tapes, which are bundled up on an alpine hotel terrace. The viewer's perception alternates between a blissful panorama and the recognition that all impressions are just electrical impulses in our brain.

Gianin Conrad expands his repertoire of forms with the work installation Urklumpen , which was on view at the Kunsthalle Winterthur in 2015. By asking the audience to regularly moisten the huge lump of clay, he involved the visitors in the work process. Interactive elements also characterize the installation playing the game 2018 in the Kunsthalle Wil. Visitors are greeted by a surreal setting: a living room situation, defined by a carpet pouring over the wall and floor, and 'furnished' with supposed seating, consisting of fired and painted clay in the form of oversized icons that are familiar from the graphic user interface on the computer , for example a cursor, a recycle bin, an on-off switch or the folder symbol. Those present are invited to play badminton with rackets and banknotes on the net hanging across the room. Gianin Conrad manages with ease in such productions to address current societal and socio-political issues such as financial juggling in business and sport.

In addition to contemporary historical references, there are also various references to the history of ideas in his work. For example, Plato's allegory of the cave was formative for him. Conrad, however, is not interested in a concrete illustration of this metaphor about a lack of knowledge and the advantages of education - rather, Plato's basic theoretical idea stands for the different perceptions of reality and thinking about where we are within these levels of being.
