Gioacchino Cocchi

Gioacchino Cocchi (* 1712 probably in Naples ; † September 11, 1796 in Venice ) was an Italian composer .

Life

Nothing is known about his childhood. With some certainty he studied from 1735 with Giovanni Veneziano at the Conservatorio di Santa Maria di Loreto in Naples. From 1739 he wrote his first serious and comic operas for Naples and Rome. He married the Florentine soprano Elisabetta Giani, who also appeared in his opera I due fratelli beffati in 1746 . In 1747 he composed the comic opera La maestra for Naples , which turned out to be his greatest success and was performed by the opera company Eustachio Bambini in Paris from 1752 to 1754 during the Buffonist dispute under the title La scaltra governatrice .

In the early 1750s he became maestro di coro at the Ospedale degl'Incurabili in Venice. For this he composed a number of oratorios, motets and other sacred works, but did not give up composing operas. In 1757 he received the commission for the opening opera Zoe of the Teatro San Benedetto .

In 1757 he traveled to London . Here he became music director at the King's Theater . Here, too, he composed several of his own operas and contributed to Pasticci . Charles Burney praised some of these performances. In 1762 he was replaced as music director by Johann Christian Bach , but stayed in London for another ten years. He had good success as a music teacher and published several collections of vocal and instrumental textbooks. He also directed Teresa Cornelys' subscription concerts at Carlisle House in Soho Square, where he met the Mozart family. He did not return to Venice until 1772.

His works were successful in Naples, Rome , Padua , Bologna , Venice, Paris , Vienna , Berlin , London a . a. listed. Some church music and around 50 operas have come down to us from his extremely extensive oeuvre. So far, only the opera Li matti per amore has appeared in a modern edition .
