Giorgio Madia (born July 29, 1965 in Milan , northern Italy ) is an Italian ballet dancer , choreographer and director .

Life

Stage career

Madia trained at the ballet school of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan from 1976 to 1984 . In 1984 he graduated as a ballet dancer in the production Le mariage du ciel et de l'enfer (The Marriage of Heaven and Hell) in the choreography of Roland Petit . He then had his first engagement at La Scala in Milan between 1984 and 1985. Madia danced his first solo part there in Jungle , a choreography by Andy De Groat . From 1985 to 1988 Madia was a solo dancer with the Ballet du XXe siècle by Maurice Béjart at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels . In 1987 Madia went with Béjart to Lausanne , where Béjart had relocated his company. From 1987 to 1988 he was a solo dancer in the Béjart Ballet Lausanne .

This was followed by further engagements as a solo dancer in the United States , with the Pennsylvania Ballet and the Milwaukee Ballet from 1988 to 1990. There Madia danced alongside parts of the classical repertoire, among others, solo parts in choreographies by George Balanchine , Robert Taylor, William Forsythe , Merce Cunningham and Richard Tanner. From 1988 to 1991 Madia went on a world tour with Rudolf Nurejew and soloists of the Paris Opera Ballet with Nureyev and Friends , performing several times in two pas de deux with Nureyev, including the choreographies La Pavane du More and Le Chant du Compagnon Errant .

In the 1990s Madia had engagements as a solo dancer with the San Francisco Ballet (1990–1992), again with the Pennsylvania Ballet as first solo dancer (1992–1993), as first solo dancer with the Italian ballet company Aterballetto (1993) and as a solo dancer with the Zurich Ballet ( 1995-1997).

Choreography and direction

In 1997 Giorgio Madia ended his active career as a dancer. Since then Madia has been working as a ballet master , as a choreographer and, in recent years, increasingly as a director. From 1997 to 1999 he was a teacher and ballet master at the Balletto di Toscana in Florence . 2000–2001 he was ballet master and choreographic assistant at the BerlinBallett at the Komische Oper under the direction of Richard Wherlock .

In October 2000 he became artistic director and chief choreographer at Teatr Wielki in Łódź .

In 2001 he became the first ballet master of the newly founded Ballet Basel. Since 2002 he has been chief choreographer of the Mörbisch Seefestspiele . In 2003 he took over directing the new production of the operetta Giuditta by Franz Lehár at short notice. From 2003 to 2005 Madia was ballet director of the Vienna Volksoper . Madia put on two full-length ballet evenings there. In March 2004 his choreography Nudo , with music by Johann Sebastian Bach and Béla Fischer , premiered there. In January 2005 Alice followed , a production based on motifs by Lewis Carroll with music by Nino Rota . Madia also took over the choreography for the operetta productions of Boccaccio , One Night in Venice and Wiener Blut . His Viennese production of Alice was shown under the title Alice's Wonderland 2007 in a new choreography by the Staatsballett Berlin at the Komische Oper in Berlin .

The operetta The Merry Widow (director: Helmuth Lohner ), for which Giorgio Madia created the choreography at the Zurich Opera House in 1997, returned to the program in 2004; the resumption was recorded and released on DVD in 2004.

Madia has been working as a freelancer since 2005. In May 2006 he choreographed the ballet Sleeping Beauty for the Teatr Wielki . This production received the Golden Mask for the best production of the 2005/06 season. In May 2007 the production Cinderella followed , which was awarded the Golden Mask in the categories of Best Director, Best Set Design and Best Costumes in the 2006/07 season. In October 2008 Madia created the choreography for The Nutcracker in Łódź . In the 2008/09 season, the Balletto di Milano produced his own choreography by Romeo e Giulietta , based on William Shakespeare with music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky . In September 2009 the world premiere of his ballet evening Chopin Imaginaire with music by Frédéric Chopin at the Cottbus State Theater . Further full-length productions followed: OZ - The Wonderful Wizard (2011, for the Staatsballett Berlin), Harlekin (a dance comedy for the Staatstheater Cottbus), Ferdinand Hérolds La fille mal gardée (2012) and Coppélia (2013), both for the Wrocław Opera House , Don Juan (2014) for the Berlin State Ballet, Swan Song for the Old Ballet Lausanne, Peter Pan (2016) for the Croatian National Theater Zagreb and Pinocchio for the Bałtycka Opera Gdańsk (2017).

Since 2006 Madia has also worked as a director in music theater. Madia took on his first directorial work in February 2006 with a production of the musical revue Ain't Misbehavin ' with music by Fats Waller in the Vienna Chamber Opera . In December 2007 Madia directed the opera for the first time in the production of Hoffmann's Tales by Jacques Offenbach at the Teatr Wielki in Łódź. This production was also awarded the Golden Mask for Best Director in the 2007/08 season. In September 2008 the Vienna Chamber Opera staged two ballet operas by Jean-Philippe Rameau , La Guirlande and Zéphyre . In December 2008 he staged in the Stadttheater Baden Baden near Vienna operetta season in Salzburg by Fred Raymond . In 2011 he staged two short operas at the Vienna Chamber Opera , Le pauvre matelot and Venus in Africa , in 2012 the musical Anatevka at the Cottbus State Theater , 2013 at the Kraków Opera House Christoph Willibald Gluck's Orphée et Eurydice as Ballet-Opéra, 2014 The Little Horror Shop at the Dresden State Operetta , 2015 A cage full of fools at the musical comedy of the Leipzig Opera .

Madia created the choreography for the opening of the Vienna Opera Ball several times (2005, 2008, 2009, 2010) . He was engaged as a choreographer for the Life Ball in Vienna in 2007, 2010 and 2011; In 2006, 2013 and 2015 he also directed the opening show. From 2015 to 2019 he designed and staged the Parieté Gala, an inclusion theater event in Berlin. Madia also sponsored the training of the first solo dancer of the Vienna State Ballet Davide Dato .
