Girishk ( Pashto : ګرشک even Gereshk ) is a small town in the district Nahri Saraj in the province of Helmand on the river Helmund in Afghanistan .

geography

The city is located about 120  km northwest of Kandahar , at an altitude of 817 meters . It is the center of an agricultural region that lies on the Kajakai Dam , which leads the water to the Boghra Canal .

history

origin

Girishk was originally built around a fortress on the east bank of the river and later rebuilt in the west. During the First Anglo-Afghan War ( 1839 - 1842 ) the fort was built by the British conquered, abandoned but later. The same thing happened in 1879 .

Operation Enduring Freedom

In November 2003 , Abdul Wahed died at the special forces base in Girishk after being tortured by the Afghan army . In April 2008 , the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines , sent there to assist the Afghan Police in training, worked with the Danish and British military.

Girishk has a hot desert climate , which is characterized by low rainfall and high fluctuations between summer and winter temperatures . Girishk is on the road " Highway 1 " in Afghanistan during the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan was built. This route connects Farah Province in the west and Kandahar Province in the east. As part of Operation Mushtarak , the British Army and Afghan workers are building Route Trident , a road that will eventually connect Girishk with the provincial capital, Lashkar Gah . Girishk is also the southern terminus of Route 611 .
