Girolamo da Treviso , also known as Girolamo Pennacchi or Girolamo di Tommaso da Treviso the Younger or Girolamo Trevigi (* probably around 1497 in Treviso ; † September 10, 1544 near Boulogne-sur-Mer ) was a Venetian painter and sculptor of the Renaissance with roots in the Bolognese school .

Life

His exact family origin is uncertain. Possibly he came from the artist and painter family of the Pennacchi and was the son of Gerolamo di Giovanni Pennacchis (* 1455, † 1497), the older brother of Pier Maria Pennacchis (* 1464; † before 1515). Therefore, it is considered likely that he was a student of his uncle. His oeuvre was under the influence of Dosso Dossi and Giovanni Antonio da Pordenone ; at the same time, da Treviso was inspired by the work of Giorgione and continued his style in the current of "Giorgionismo". From 1523 there is evidence of an activity since Treviso in Bologna , but he was probably active there for three years longer. His most famous works from that time today are the figurative decorations on the portal of the Basilica of San Petronio and grisaille paintings inside the church. During this creative period he orientated himself significantly to Parmigianino and especially to the technique of Raphael's ecstasy of St. Cecilia . In later years he worked in Genoa , Faenza and Trento and at the newly built Palazzo del Te in Mantua . He often signed his works with "Ieronimo Veneziano, scultore".

Girolamo da Treviso announced in a letter in 1538 that he had entered the service of Henry VIII of England and worked at his court as a military engineer. He achieved some prosperity there and continued to paint. In 1544 he took part in the first siege of Boulogne-sur-Mer - as part of a sideline to the Italian wars . Presumably from cannon fire from the defenders, he died less than a week before the city was taken.

reception

The figure of Girolamo da Treviso was most recently processed in the Irish - Canadian television series The Tudors . In the eighth episode of the fourth season he is portrayed - played by the actor Daniel Caltagirone - as an innovative strategist in the English army. With the help of a specially dug long tunnel system from his own camp under the citadel of Boulogne-sur-Mers, he tries to bring about a quick end to the siege. To do this, he deposited an explosive charge at the end of the tunnel , the detonation of which caused the French fortress and the city walls to collapse in part and enable the British to penetrate the city without any problems. Because Treviso himself dies in the explosion because he cannot escape from the tunnel in time.
