The Gleinalpe or Gleinalm is a wide mountain range in Styria northwest of the provincial capital Graz . It covers around 50 × 30 km between the mining towns of Leoben and Köflach as well as Frohnleiten and Knittelfeld and belongs to the Lavanttal Alps and the Styrian peripheral mountains . The highest peak is the Lenzmoarkogel ( 1991 m above sea level ).

The Gleinalpe is a rather gentle high mountain range , which has about 15 peaks from 1700 to 2000 m.
The Gleinalpe is bordered by the Murtal from Zeltweg to the Gratkorner Basin in the north and east, by the Gratkorn - Köflach line with the West Styrian Riedelland in the south, and from the Gaberlpass in the southwest to the Pack and Stubalpe .
The Gleinalpe, rich in forests and pastures, ends in the northeast with the peaks of the Hochalpe (Wetterkogel, 1643 m ) and the Mugel ( 1630 m above sea level ) north of it. South of the Hochalm lies the saddle at the Almwirt ( 1170 m , Diebsweg ) as the border between the two (sub-areas R.4 and R.4a of the Styrian landscape structure ).
The demarcation to the Stubalpe in the southwest is considered more problematic, here the Gaberlpass ( 1547 m ) applies in general , in the landscape structure of Styria the depth line Rachaugraben - Stierkreuz ( 1485 m ) - scrap ditch between Graden and Knittelfeld (near Oskar-Schauer-Sattelhaus ) is mentioned . The mountain group breakdown according to Trimmel , where Stub- and Gleinalpe are combined as No. 2780, also sees a border at the Gleinalmsattel ( 1586 m ) south of the Speikkogel between Sankt Margarethen bei Knittelfeld and Übelbach .
The southern border and the transition to the (western) Grazer Bergland , which forms the foothills of the Gleinalm, are just as problematic .
The sections on the main ridge of the Gleinalpe are called (from west to east):
- Turneralpe from above Gaberl to the Stierkreuz
- Terenbachalpe to the saddle at the Zeißmannhütte
- Roßbachalpe to the Gleinalmsattel
- Speikkogel ( 1988 m ) - Lärchkogel ( 1894 m ) as the main solid -Zug to Kreuzsattel ( 1583 m )
- Lammalpe ( Eiblkogl 1831 m ) to the Polstersattel ( 1505 m )
- Fensteralpe ( 1618 m ) to the Almwirtsattel
- Hochalpe ( i.e. S.) to the Eisenpass ( 1183 m )
- Angeralpe (Hochanger) to the Mur
History and culture
The name comes from the early Slovenian word Glina , which means ' clay ', i.e. 'Lehmalpe'.
The massif been known for centuries, only remote pasture region and cumbersome Saumweg administration to bypass the Murknies about Bruck and Murdurchbruchstal , by the Gleinalmtunnel the A9 Pyhrnautobahn . It is a good 8 km long and enables a faster motorway connection from Upper Austria to Graz or northern Europe to the Upper Adriatic .
In the area of Gleinalmschutzhaus, Roßbachkogel and Brendlstall are the summer pastures of the Lipizzaner horses , which is why the southwestern Gleinalm area bears the modern tourist name Lipizzanerheimat . On the Gleinalmsattel at the Gleinalm-Gasthaus is the small pilgrimage church Maria Schnee , where masses are held on Mary's holidays in summer, for which the parish of Übelbach is responsible.

Paths and tours
The area is developed with numerous hiking trails, but offers only a few mountain huts as bases for hikers. Many ditches from the Murtal are provided with roads that are open to the public. The southeastern part between Graz and Köflach is a particularly popular excursion area. There are also the jokingly so-called Graz three-thousanders ( Pleschkogel 1061 m , Heiggerkogel 1098 m and Mühlbacherkogel 1050 m ), which can be climbed as a day tour and together have a height of 3209 m.
Two Austrian long-distance hiking trails lead through the mountains:
- North-south long-distance hiking trail (path 05)
- Central Alpine Trail (Route 02)
Due to the large distance between the refuges and valley locations, a very strenuous day's stage should be planned.
Huts
- Hochanger Schutzhaus ( 1304 m ): on the summit of the Hochanger in the northeast
- Mugelschutzhaus (formerly Hans-Prosl-Haus) ( 1630 m ): at the summit of the Mugel in the north
- Carl-Hermann emergency accommodation ( 1420 m ): southeast of the Fensteralm, not managed, accessible with the Alpine Club key
- Gasthof Gleinalm ( 1586 m ): on the Gleinalmsattel, about 400 meters below the summit of the Speikkogel .
- Oskar-Schauer-Sattelhaus ( 1394 m ): to the west of the Stierkreuz located just below the main ridge
- Steinplan Schutzhaus ( 1670 m ): at the summit of Steinplan, which forms the western end of the mountains
