The history of Glidden began in 1867 when the then Chicago North Western Railway established a stop here. The place was named after Joseph Farwell Glidden (1813-1906), the inventor of the barbed wire, who was then one of the directors of the railway company.
In 1873 the settlement was incorporated as an independent municipality and the first mayor, J. O. Havens , was elected.
