Geidorf is the 3rd district of Graz . The "Gaidorf" (Middle High German for "village on the flat land") was formerly part of the Grazer Vorstadt, today the district is centrally located in the city north of the old town and the Schloßberg . Geidorf is best known as the location of the Karl-Franzens University and the University Hospital (LKH-Ost) . Due to its proximity to the city center, parts of the district are very busy, in other parts it is a relatively quiet, typically urban residential area.
location
The Geidorf district is located north of the first two districts, Innere Stadt and St. Leonhard . In the east it extends to the Graz State Hospital University Clinic, in the west it is bordered by the Mur , in the south the foot of the Graz Schloßberg, which is quite steep at this point, forms the border. The border to the Andritz district in the north is historical and largely corresponds to the border between the city of Graz more than a hundred years ago and the then still independent village of Andritz. The Reinerkogel, the highest elevation in the district, lies on it .
history
Excavations that were made during the renovation of the Leech Church have proven that it was settled in the Urnfield period. However, from this it cannot be concluded that there has been a continuous settlement of 3,000 years.
The name Geidorf means ' suburb '. The original Geidorf was in Graz within the old city wall near the Paulustor. Due to an expansion as a result of an increase in population, the suburb was moved to its current location.
Geidorf has its historical core in a small settlement between Heinrichstrasse and Leechkirche. This was expanded in the second half of the 19th century to include a bourgeois residential area, which was built a little further north between Heinrichstrasse and Grabenstrasse. The front gardens typical of the Wilhelminian era were laid out in individual streets in front of the buildings . Behind it, a villa area extends to the south and west slopes of the rose grove. The most important economic operator in Geidorf at that time was the Graz sugar factory , which was founded in 1825 and was located on the former Mühlgang , in which the first steam engine in Styria was also put into operation.
Today the district is very densely populated in some places near the city park and the old core, mainly old buildings characterize the cityscape. At the foothills of the Rosenhaines, however, there is a partially thin settlement and the areas around the Rosenhain are a popular local recreation area.

The main traffic axes for car traffic in the city and the district are above all Grabenstrasse , Heinrichstrasse and Elisabethstrasse , the latter located in the south on the border between the Geidorf and St. Leonhard districts .
As the last significant road construction project in the district, the Grazer Nordspange was opened as an underground route in 2002, which connects the two main arterial roads to the north, Grabenstrasse and Wiener Strasse. Although it was generally controversial among the residents and the city population before the construction, the north spine has, among other things, led to a reduction in traffic in the residential areas in the north-west of Geidorf. The realization of the planned "Eastern Belt" (the streets "Geidorfgürtel", "Rosenberggürtel" and "Grabengürtel" are reminiscent of this concept) is unlikely to be expected from today's perspective.
Public transport in the district is well developed: tram line 1 runs through the district in the southeast towards Mariatrost or Eggenberg, lines 4 and 5 connect the northwestern part of Geidorf with the city center, as well as Liebenau and Puntigam , as well as Andritz to the north . In addition, the bus routes 30, 31, 39, 41, 53, 58, 62 and 63 run to various important places and facilities in the district and increase the local public transport offer.

In addition to the compulsory schools and higher schools that are usual in Austria, the Geidorf district is primarily known as a university location, as the main locations of two universities, two pedagogical universities and one technical college are located in the district.
Since the merger of the Graben and Muchar elementary schools, there is only one classic elementary school in the district called the Geidorf elementary school . Additionally, the Styrian University of Education and the Church Teaching University each offer a practical elementary school. Large parts of the State Hospital University Clinic Graz , with an area of 60 hectares the largest hospital in Europe, are located in the east of Geidorf. The hospital, popularly known as the "Uni-Klinik", is a maximum care hospital and covers medical care for the entire east of the city of Graz and the surrounding communities. Furthermore, as a specialty hospital and university clinic, it is the contact point for patients from all parts of the city and across the city Styria and Burgenland.
The headquarters of the Malteser Hospital Service is located in Geidorf, more precisely on Humboldtstrasse in the immediate vicinity of the Schloßberg . On this station are an ambulance , and two ambulances stationed, they are appropriate, through National control center of the Red Cross predisposed to rescue operations, but are not about ready around the clock and seven days a week. Outside the Maltese office hours, Geidorf, like the rest of the eastern districts of Graz, is supplied by the main rescue station in the Jakomini district . Attractions
- LKH-Universitätsklinikum Graz : Built in 1912 in the pavilion style, it was for a long time the largest hospital in the world in terms of the number of beds. Today there are numerous clinics of comparable size, but due to the pavilion construction, the hospital is still the largest hospital in Europe in terms of area. The hospital is also the university clinic of the Medical University of Graz .
- Leechkirche
- Grabenkirche : The Grabenkirche zum St. Johannes dT wasconsecrated in 1652as the church of aCapuchin convent that was later closed under Josef II . On one side wall it contains one of the main works of the important Styrian baroque painter Hans Adam Weissenkircher , namely the picture Annunciation to Maria .
- Salvator Church
- Karl-Franzens-University of Graz : Built from 1870 to 1895 and Emperor Franz Joseph I opened. Since then, it has been repeatedly expanded with new buildings. The Graz University Library , the third largest library in Austria,is located in a directly connected new building.
- Meerscheinschlössl : Baroque pleasure building . With regard to the artistically remarkable garden front, it occupies a special position in the Baroque architecture of Graz.
- Elisabethhochhaus: Erected in the 1960s, at 75 meters (25 floors) it is the tallest residential building in Graz (although not the tallest building , this is the Herz-Jesu-Kirche at 109.6 meters).

Sports
- Casino Stadium Graz: From 1902 to 2005, the Grazer AK with its traditional venue was located in the Geidorf district. In 2005 the soccer section moved to the newly built training center in Andritz , the soccer stadium was demolished and replaced by residential buildings. The tennis section will, however, remain on the historic sports grounds on Körösistraße.
Recreation
- Hilnteich : Originally a clay pit for a brickworks, a popular excursion destination in the east of the district at the foot of the Leechwald since the middle of the 19th century . From here a hiking trail leads to Mariatrost . Popular ice rink in winter.
- University Sports Center: The center of the University Sports Institute with a running track and swimming pool is located in the district. Many students use it for local recreation, and events take place regularly.
- The so-called "Rosenhain", an inner-city recreation area and a popular excursion destination for many Grazers, borders the university sports center.
