Greenfield is located in central southwest Iowa, around 130 km east of the Missouri River , which forms the border with Nebraska . The border with the neighboring state of Missouri to the south is about 90 km from Greenfield.

The first white settlers came to the area of today's city in 1854. In 1856 Milton C. Munger acquired extensive land for the systematic development of the settlement.
A post office was set up in Greenfield. From here, stagecoach lines connected Greenfield with Des Moines and Council Bluffs .
The first school was built in 1861, the first doctor's office opened in 1864, TW Neville's law firm started practicing in 1869. More shops opened up, so that in 1873 there were three general stores, a saddlery, two blacksmiths, a drugstore and a hotel in Greenfield.
The Greenfield Transcript was the first newspaper to be published and printed in Greenfield in 1875. In the same year the first bank was opened in the city.
In 1879 the settlement was connected to the railway network. In addition to passenger traffic, the transportation of freight played a major role in the local economy.
After a long struggle with the neighboring town of Fontanelle , the administrative headquarters were moved to Greenfield in 1875.
In 1876 the settlement was incorporated as the City of Greenfield and AP Littleton was elected its first mayor.
A year later the first church was built in Greenfield.
In 1883 large parts of the city burned down. This was followed by a rebuilding of the city. Today's Adair County Courthouse , a neo-Romanesque brick building, was built in 1891.
In 1896 a telephone network was established in the city, one of the first in Iowa.

The racial the population was composed of 98.0 percent white, 0.2 percent African American, 0.1 percent (one person) Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and 0.8 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 2.2 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
22.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 53.6 percent were between 18 and 64 and 24.0 percent were 65 years or older. 52.2 percent of the population were female.
