Groß Kölzig ( Lower Sorbian Wjeliki Kólsk ) is a district of the municipality of Neisse-Malxetal in the district of Spree-Neisse in southeastern Brandenburg . It belongs to the traditional settlement area of the Sorbs / Wends.

geography

Groß Kölzig is located in Niederlausitz , east of the Muskau fold , between Forst and Weißwasser / Oberlausitz . The border between Germany and Poland is about 10 kilometers away. The next big city is Cottbus .

history

The place is mentioned for the first time in 1346 as Kolczig in a public register of the diocese of Meissen . Due to the historical shape of the village, however, it can be assumed that Groß Kölzig is much older. The place name is the altsorbischen Kelc ( pinewood or Heide ), or glycol ( stake or peg derived) and therefore with Heidedorf or Pfahldorf definition.

Since the 14th century, Groß Kölzig was the ancestral seat of the von Berge family . They were vassals of the Biebersteiner .

Groß Kölzig was predominantly Sorbian-speaking until the 19th century . Nevertheless, worship in the Sorbian language, which had existed here since the 16th century, was finally abolished in 1840. This corresponded to the extermination of the language in the formerly almost exclusively Sorbian-speaking area, which was aimed at by the authorities. The last Sorbian service was held in Preschen as early as 1797.

With industrialization, lignite mining came to Groß Kölzig. The Conrad mine opened in 1860 and closed in 1959. The mining also brought with it other businesses, which led to an increase in the number of inhabitants and in 1933 there were 1740 inhabitants in the village. With the decline of lignite mining, the number of residents shrank to 940.

The independent community of Groß Kölzig voluntarily joined forces on December 31, 2001 with the communities of Jerischke, Klein Kölzig , Preschen and Jocksdorf to form the community of Neisse-Malxetal in the Döbern-Land district.

Saint Mary's Church

The church in Groß Kölzig

The St. Marien Church is the oldest building in the village and is a listed building. Its first mention is also that of the village of Groß Kölzig. However, it was probably built in the first half of the 13th century. The village church initially had no tower. The bells were rung from a separate bell house until the 17th century.

traffic

The main street of Groß Kölzig is formed by Döberner Straße, Dorfstraße and Bahnhofstraße. Federal highway 115 passes to the west of the village . This can be used to reach the A 15 at the Forst junction .

The Groß Kölzig train station was on the western edge . The Weißwasser – Forst railway line , which was closed in 1996, ran along here.

Groß Kölzig is very well connected to the long-distance cycle route network in Brandenburg . The Niederlausitz mining tour leads directly through the village.
