Grzegorz Nagórski (born April 11, 1964 in Tczew ) is a Polish jazz musician ( trombone , also euphonium , composition).

Live and act

Nagórski began taking music lessons at the age of eleven; he first played tuba and bass guitar . He then received trombone lessons at the secondary school in Gdańsk . In 1982 he made his professional debut at the Jazz Piano Festival in Kalisz in the band of Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski . The following year he began studying at the Karol Szymanowski Music Academy in Katowice , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1987. From 1990 he continued his studies at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton and then at the University of Miami , where he completed his Masters in 1993.

As early as the 1980s he appeared with the jazz-funk band Young Power (on tours in Germany, Sweden and Norway), with whom he recorded two albums. During his studies in the USA he played with Ira Sullivan , Tito Puente , Ray Charles , Maria Schneider , Red Rodney , Michael Brecker , Joe Henderson , Slide Hampton , Arturo Sandoval and Pete Minger .

From the mid-1990s Nagórski played in Europe with Henryk Miśkiewicz (never Yes chcę spać) , Zbigniew Namysłowski , Cuba Stankiewicz (Chopin Songbook) , Piotr Wojtasik , Robert Majewski , Jarosław Śmietana , Maciej Sikala, Leszek Możdżer and Claus Raible (Loopin 'with Lea) . He was also a member of the Jazz Big Band Graz and can be heard on their albums with Bob Brookmeyer and Ed Neumeister . He also worked with Grzegorz Angorski (Dedication) and Adam Pierończyk , with whom he also toured Germany in 2017.

In 2008 his first album was released under his own name, Dedication , on which he presents his own compositions in a quartet with Paweł Tomaszewski (piano), Andrzej Święs (bass) and Łukasz Żyta (drums). Over and Over followed in 2012 . He has also performed at several jazz festivals , including the oldest Polish music festival Jazz Jamboree , the Salzburg Jazz Autumn and the Molde International Jazz Festival in Norway.

Nagórski worked for the University of Miami from 1992 to 1994 as a lecturer in the jazz department. From 1994 to 1995 he taught at Florida Atlantic University. Since 1999 he has also worked as a jazz teacher for the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw and for the Karol Lipiński Music Academy in Wroclaw . He is a member of the faculty of the jazz department of the Kraków Music Academy , where he obtained his doctorate in 2005, and is a staff member at the Jazz Institute of the Karol Szymanowski Music Academy in Katowice.

Prizes and awards

In 1983 he was awarded in the National Jazz Improvisation Competition in Poland. Since 1996 he has been leading the readers poll of the Jazz Forum as best trombonist. In 2013 he received a Fryderyk for his album Dedication .
