history

A necropolis from the Latène period was discovered during excavations in the former municipal area .

The spelling of the name was not uniform in either Latin or French in the Middle Ages and early modern times . So the place has been documented differently over time: 1082 apud Gunniicurtem , 1138 Gungicuertis , 1150 Winicurtis , 1162 Guinnicourt , 1173 Guinicurt , 1187 Guignecurt , 1221 Guignicort , 1224 Guignecort , 1226 Guynicort , 1232 Guignicurte , 1237 Guignacuria , 1307 Guingnicort , 1488 Guignycourt and 1599 Guygnicourt .

The village was badly affected during the First World War . It was occupied by German troops in 1914 . After the first battle on the Marne , the Germans were able to stay in place. After that, the main front line ran around 6 km away for a long time, so the place was temporarily under fire from French artillery. The Battle of the Aisne in 1917 raged in the immediate vicinity. Because between the western towns of Berry-au-Bac and Juvincourt-et-Damary , the battle for the town of La Ville-aux-Bois-lès-Pontavert raged . But the Germans were able to hold Guignicourt and Juvincourt-et-Damary. Only after the second battle of the Marne in 1918 did the front move east of Guignicourt. During the Hundred Days Offensive on October 12, 1918, the village was liberated by the French. In these battles, the Saint-Pierre church burned down completely. It was rebuilt between 1921 and 1932.

Partner municipality

Since 1986 Guignicourt has had a partnership with the community of Illerrieden in the Alb-Donau district in Baden-Württemberg.
