Gustav Karl Julius Josef Sandkuhl (born May 11, 1828 in Münster , † February 24, 1892 in Cologne ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and inspector of the 4th engineer inspection.

Life

He was the son of the Prussian Rittmeister Ludgerus Heinrich Gerhard Sandkuhl (1789–1844) and his wife Josephine, née Nölten (1796–1862).

Military career

After attending grammar school in Hamm and the cadet houses in Bensberg and Berlin , Sandkuhl was aggregated as a second lieutenant in the engineering corps of the Prussian Army on May 27, 1845 . From October 1845 to July 1849 he completed the United Artillery and Engineering School for further training and was assigned to the Reserve Pioneer Inspection on July 11, 1847. During the mobilization on the occasion of the autumn crisis in 1850 he was adjutant to the chief of engineering of the mobile VII Army Corps . From the beginning of February 1851 he performed fortification service in Wesel and on April 1, 1852 became adjutant of the 8th pioneer department. On March 11, 1854 he returned to Wesel for fortification work and rose to the position of Prime Lieutenant at the end of March 1854 .

From October 1854, Sandkuhl graduated from the General War School for three years , was then transferred to the first engineer inspection and at the same time sent to Königsberg for fortification . On May 4, 1858, he was promoted to captain (officer) . Because of his work in the fortification he received a commendation on October 3, 1859. On November 9, 1860, Sandkuhl came to the 1st engineer inspection as an adjutant. In addition, from July 1863 he was a member of the examination commission for captains and prime lieutenants of the engineering corps and from mid-November 1863 to mid-June 1866 a member of the study commission for the artillery and engineering school. On December 1, 1863, Sandkuhl was appointed 2nd adjutant to the General Inspectorate of the fortresses and on January 13, 1864, left in his position à la suite, to the 1st engineer inspection. On June 5, 1866, he was assigned to the 1st engineer inspection.

After he had resigned from his position in the study commission, Sandkuhl came to the staff of the General Command of the I. Reserve Army Corps on June 17, 1866 during the mobilization on the occasion of the German War and took part in the campaign in southern Germany.

On August 24, 1866, he was transferred to the Mainz fortress and, on October 10, 1866, to the 3rd engineering inspection. From November 23, 1866 to March 2, 1867 he came to the Federal Fortress of Ulm and was there in charge of the liquidation business. He was also promoted to major on January 19, 1867. As such, he was commanded from May 4 to July 27, 1867 in the fortress of Rastatt to take over the business of engineering. On October 17, 1867 he was appointed commander of the pioneer battalion No. 2 that Sandkuhl led during the war against France at Gravelotte and Villiers and the sieges of Metz and Paris .

Awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class, he was an engineer officer from the square in Cologne after the peace agreement on October 18, 1871, and in this capacity was promoted to lieutenant colonel on January 18, 1872 . On January 27, 1872, Sandkuhl subsequently received the Iron Cross First Class, was appointed colonel on September 19, 1874 , and on November 12, 1874 with the management of the business as department head in the engineering committee as well as a member of the examination committee of the engineering corps. On April 13, 1874, he was released from the Department of War in the Ministry of War and on June 15, 1875 from his position on the examination board of the engineering corps. On June 18, 1876, Sandkuhl received the rank and fees as brigade commander, in mid-June 1877 he became a member of the Upper Military Study Commission and the Study Commission of the War Academy, and on September 21, 1877 he was awarded the Crown Order of the Second Class. With promotion to major general, Sandkuhl became inspector of the 4th engineer inspection on May 13, 1880, and was promoted to lieutenant general on June 1, 1885. It was on July 14, 1885 Board for disposition made, and died on 24 February 1892 in Cologne.

Sandkuhl married Alexandrine Schützler (1835–1890) in Königsberg in 1859 . The couple had several children.
