Hermann Gustav Albert Schroeder (born October 15, 1818 in Glogau , † October 6, 1899 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Origin and family

Gustav was a son of the higher regional court registrar Heinrich Schroeder and Johanna Dorothea Schröter. He married Natalie von Seltzer, with whom he had three children. He concluded another marriage in Glatz in 1853 with Auguste Charlotte Wilhelmine Bullé (1817–1862), which however remained without heirs.

Career

Schroeder attended the grammar school in Glogau and in 1835 joined the 6th engineer department of the Prussian army as a volunteer or pioneer . From 1836 to 1839 he was assigned to the artillery and engineering school . During this time Schoeder advanced to Portepée - Ensign in 1837 and was aggregated as Second Lieutenant of the 2nd Engineer Inspection in 1838 . Immediately after his training, he moved to the 5th engineering department and in 1841 back to the 6th engineering department, and in 1842 he was finally transferred to the 2nd engineering inspection. From 1843 to 1847 he served successively on the fortifications of Glatz , Torgau , Magdeburg and Silberberg . In 1849 he became Premier Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 3rd Fortress Inspectorate. He was promoted to captain in the 6th engineering department in 1852. He returned to the artillery and engineering school as a teacher of hydraulic engineering in 1853 . Schroeder was used in 1857 at the 3rd engineering inspection to expand the Koblenz fortress and in 1859 at the 2nd engineering inspection to expand the Schweidnitz fortress . Here he was an engineer officer from the field in 1859, before he rose to major in 1861 and in 1862 became the fortress construction director in Posen . He was promoted in 1866 to lieutenant colonel and was awarded in 1868 the character of Colonel . The patent of his rank was issued in the same year with the appointment to the 7th fortress inspection backdated to the character award. In 1871 Schroeder was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle III. Awarded class with a ribbon . He received the character of a major general in 1873 and became head of department in the engineering committee and member of the examination committee of the engineering corps. In 1874 Schroeder was put up for disposal with his pension and the award of the Crown Order II. Class .

Nevertheless, he was a member of the teaching staff of the artillery and engineering school for another 25 years. For many years he was the editor of the magazine Archive for artillery and engineering officers, which was discontinued in 1879, and the author of various specialist articles.
