Gustav Xaver Reinhold von Ryssel (also: Ryssel I , born May 13, 1771 in Freyburg an der Unstrut ; † October 17, 1845 in Prittag , district of Grünberg in Silesia ) was a royal Saxon major general , later a Prussian infantry general and commander of Neisse .

Life

origin

The Ryssel family was a French merchant family who emigrated to Saxony. In 1690 a master builder named Wilhelm von Ryssel appeared in Leipzig . The dealer Christoph Heinrich von Ryssel lived in Leipzig in 1702 and was an ancestor of the general. Whose parents were the Electorate of Saxony Colonel Georg Dietrich von Ryssel (* May 16, 1730, † January 16, 1804) and his wife Maria Anna, born of Eichinger (born September 12, 1741). His brother Anton Friedrich Karl von Ryssel became a Prussian lieutenant general .

Military career

Ryssel joined as a cadet in Saxon service and entered the Infantry Regiment "Prince Xaver". There he became an ensign on March 6, 1781 and sub-lieutenant on July 31, 1790 . In the First Coalition War , he fought in southern Germany against the French in the battle near Maxbach. On May 9, 1798, he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant and in 1804 came to General Johann Adolph von Oebschelwitz as General Inspection Adjutant .

In the Fourth Coalition War Ryssel was wounded in the neck in the Battle of Auerstedt , but then fought on the French side in the siege of Danzig . After the war he was promoted to captain on August 24, 1807 , and on October 27, 1809 as a major in the general staff . In 1809 he also took part in the campaign against Austria . On May 1, 1810, he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the LeCoq Infantry Division. There he rose on March 13, 1811 to lieutenant colonel and on July 31, 1812 to colonel . On August 25, 1812 he was appointed commander of the "Prince Anton" infantry regiment. During the Russian campaign in 1812 Ryssel fought in the battles near Pdobna, Wolowitz, Bruzina, Kliniki and Biala. For Wolowitz he received the Knight's Cross of the Military Order of St. Henry . After his return he was appointed major general on September 22, 1813. At the beginning of the Wars of Liberation , he initially stood on the French side. Ryssel acquired the Legion of Honor in the Battle of Bautzen and took part in the battles near Großbeeren and Dennewitz . He continued to fight in the battles near Görlitz, Reichenbach, Wittstock and Arnoldsmühle. In the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig , Ryssel and his brigade transferred to the Allies. In 1814 he came to the Russian governor of Saxony General Repnin . Ryssel fought in the siege of Maubeuge and lastly in 1815 in the battle of Belle Alliance , for which he received the Iron Cross 2nd class. On February 21, 1815, he moved to the Prussian service as major general with a patent from December 30, 1813.

He was initially placed at the side of General von Gaudi in Dresden. On March 19, 1815 Ryssel came to the IV Army Corps as brigade chief . In addition to his salary, he received an allowance of 1200 thalers from March 28, 1815, and on July 10, 1815 he was appointed chief of the 2nd Brigade. On October 3, 1815, he was transferred to the Army Corps in France as a brigade chief. In addition, on October 27, 1815, he received a gift of 2000 thalers from the king. On March 27, 1817, Ryssel was awarded the Order of St. Anna 1st Class. On September 5, 1818 he was appointed commander of the 12th Division and on October 26, 1818 with the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class excellent. On February 22nd, 1820 he was assigned to take on the business as the commander of the Neisse fortress. In this capacity Ryssel received his promotion to lieutenant general on March 30, 1820 with a patent from April 3, 1820. On January 18, 1821 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves, and on September 9, 1828, the Order of the Red Eagle, 1st Class, with Oak Leaves. On October 15, 1831 Ryssel was able to celebrate his 50th anniversary of service before his departure on June 27, 1832 as General of the Infantry was granted with a statutory pension . He died on October 17, 1845 on Prittag (Grünberg district in Silesia).

Ryssel married Konstantine Johanna Friederike von Heßler († after 1870) in 1804, a daughter of the governor Rudolph Adam von Heßler . The daughter Emilie Helene Friederike Marianne (born June 12, 1808) emerged from the marriage and died on April 29, 1817 in Stenay, France.
