origin

His parents were the electoral Saxon colonel Georg Dietrich von Ryssel (* May 16, 1730 - January 16, 1804) and his wife Maria Anna, born von Eichinger (* September 12, 1741). His brother Gustav Xaver Reinhold von Ryssel became a Prussian infantry general .

Military career

Ryssel went to the Electoral Saxon service and came on March 1, 1785 as a cadet in the cadet house in Dresden. From there he came on January 19, 1791 as an ensign in the infantry regiment "Zanther". There he became Sousleutnant on August 10, 1794 , as such he took part in the First Coalition War from 1795 . On August 25, 1802 he was appointed Premier Lieutenant, in 1806 he was then Brigade Adjutant to General von Bevilacqua. In the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the battle near Saalbach and in the battle near Jena , where he was wounded. On October 21, 1808 he became a captain and on October 2, 1809 he was appointed major in the general staff. During the Fifth Coalition War he fought in the battles near Linz, Mautern, Amstetten, Stauffen and the Battle of Wagram . For Wagram he received the Knight's Cross of the Military Order of St. Henry . In 1810 he was appointed Sousin Inspector aux revues of the Saxon Infantry Division. On July 30, 1812, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. During the Russian campaign in 1812 he was director of the mobile Saxon troops in Russia. There were many complaints about his management here; the view was openly expressed that he was equal to the French officials in terms of legality and participation in embezzlement . Nevertheless, he received the order of the French Legion of Honor . On July 30, 1813, he was promoted to colonel and became the commander of the infantry regiment "Prince Friedrich Anton". Like his brother, he switched to the Allies in the Battle of Leipzig . In the same year he was also major general in Saxony. In 1814 he was also awarded the Order of St. Vladimir III. Class. Like his brother, he first worked with the Russian governor of Saxony General Repnin . But the way in which he went to the hand, drew him to a high degree the hatred and contempt of his compatriots.

With his brother he left the Saxon service on February 21, 1815 and worked for the Prussian General von Gaudi . It was not until June 10, 1816 that he became a Prussian major general with a patent on January 6, 1814. On July 1, 1815, he joined the 1st Army Corps as brigade chief. On October 3, 1815, he was transferred to Glogau as commander of the brigade. But on October 25, 1815 he was appointed head of the brigade in Koblenz.

At the revue in Koblenz on August 8, 1818 he received the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class, on September 5, 1818 he was transferred to the 16th Division as commander . On January 20, 1820 Ryssel had a duel with the commander of the 15th Cavalry Brigade , General Alexander Wilhelm von der Goltz , who was killed in the process. The incident had no real impact on him. In 1821 he got permission to wear the Commander's Cross of the Grand Duke of Baden's Order of Merit. On March 30, 1822, he was promoted to Lieutenant General with a patent on March 31, 1822. On August 9, 1825, he received the Prussian Service Cross and on September 13, 1825, the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. On December 8, 1830, it was put up for disposal . He died on April 17, 1833 in Giebichenstein near Halle an der Saale.

family

Ryssel was married twice. On June 14, 1797, he married Charlotte Louise von Einsiedel (* 1766; † July 31, 1819) at Annaburg Castle . After the death of his first wife, he married Christiane Friederike Hassenberg in Trier in 1821. She was the widow of Moritz Christoph von Brandt († June 3, 1819). This came from the Saxon service and died as a Prussian colonel and commander of the 4th Franconian Landwehr Regiment. With her he had a stepson Franz Julius von Brandt (* 1801), second lieutenant in Infantry Regiment No. 31.
