Hornegg Castle

Gut Hornegg is a farm in the market town of Preding , pol. Deutschlandsberg district in Styria consisting of a castle with a historic model courtyard and a pond system that dates back to management in the Baroque period. Hornegg lies between the Sausal wine route and the Stainzer Schilcherland. Gut Hornegg is known as a company for the sustainable breeding of freshwater fish, and apartments and holiday apartments are also rented out.

history

The first mention of a Konrad von Horneck goes back to the year 1230, when he attested to the clarification of the legal relationships between the Augustinian canons of Stainz and the rule of Wildon . The name of the property Horneck (later Hornegg) probably comes from the Middle High German term hore for swamp , meaning a castle above the swamp , which allows conclusions to be drawn about today's pond areas in the Predinger district of Tobis.

The Saurau family acquired the estate in 1373 and owned Hornegg until 1603, when it was sold as a result of the denominational disputes. Fish farming became an important branch of the economy under the Saurau family and the castle was designed in the Renaissance style . The main portal, dated 1557, marks the completion of this expansion.

For 165 years, from 1620 to the dissolution of the monastery in 1785 by Emperor Joseph II , Hornegg belonged to the Augustinian Canon Monastery of Stainz. The fish from our own farm were brought to the clergy in Stainz as a fasting food. The stucco in the representative rooms on the first floor of the castle still testifies to the spiritual owners.

After numerous changes of ownership, Daniel Lapp acquired the property in 1875. The pioneer in construction technology built the Schwanberg - Wies railway line with his brothers Jakob and Ludwig and was later responsible for the breakthrough of the Arlberg tunnel - for the first time using steam-powered drilling machines - for which he became a nobility was raised. Lapp Hornegg built along the lines of Archduke Johann to a Mustergut from. The current appearance of Hornegg Castle is essentially based on the redesign by Daniel von Lapp in 1875.

The television presenter and radio broadcaster Carl Reichsgraf von Schönfeldt , who hosted the opera ball organized by his future wife Christl “Countess” Schönfeldt in 1963 , lived in his early years at the estate, which his father acquired in 1917 and for this reason he adopted the pseudonym Rudolf Hornegg .

In 1940 the South Tyrolean industrial family Brigl acquired the Hornegg estate, which has been owned by the family since then. The Holler family, descendants of the Brigl family, run Gut Hornegg today as an organic fish farm and holiday home.

Hornegg Castle

Copper engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from Topographia Ducatus Stiriae, Graz 1681

The Horneck Castle was strategically located on the foothills of the Spiegelkogel, which sloped steeply on three sides to the former Tobis marshland. Hornegg Castle is a three-storey four-wing building with an inner courtyard with arcades on two sides. The core of the building dates from the 16th century, the main portal is dated to 1557.

There are no early building descriptions and the first picture document comes from Georg Matthäus Vischer from his Topographia Ducatus Stiriae , Graz 1681. The first comprehensive building description, which is probably based on the original use, dates from 1818.

“The stately palace building was tiled, two stories high and had a very small courtyard. In the two underground, vaulted wine cellars there was room for 56 Startin wine in half-starter barrels (one Startin equals 566 liters), next to it there was a spacious cabbage and beet cellar and an insert cellar. On the ground floor of the castle there were three spacious vaults, including the steward's and small supervisor's kitchen, baking kitchen, smoky kitchen, kitchen supplies room, the small milk vault, a vaulted servants' room, a stucco servants' room, a gatekeeper 's room, a stuff room, a vaulted little chicken room, a "private vaulted chicken room" (Abort) - everything in mediocre structural condition. On the first floor there was a spacious, brick-paved entrance hall to the east (good structural condition), to the south four living rooms with stucco, a vaulted living room (in good structural condition), a privet (mediocre), to the west two living rooms with stucco (good structural condition), one Flammable small emergency kitchen for the clerks (covered with shingles, poor condition), to the north an office with stucco, a vaulted archive (good condition), a large "Rondellen room threatening to collapse" and an already collapsed Privet. The second floor finally offered a spacious, brick-paved entrance hall to the east (good condition), to the south three living rooms with stucco (good condition), a privet (mediocre), to the west a large hall in danger of collapsing, to the north two living rooms (good condition), " in the Rundellen the very dangerous chapel threatening to collapse "and on the roof a wooden tower in poor condition."

- Description of the estate from 1818

The castle only underwent major changes after it was taken over by Daniel Lapp in 1875. At that time, it was essentially given its current appearance. The roof system was renewed and a staircase was installed in the north tower. A large balcony was attached to the south facade at the level of the first floor and the facades were supplemented by bay windows, cornices and sculptural elements. In summer 2018, the north facade of the castle was designed by the Styrian artist Bernhard Wolf .

Hornegg Castle has been placed under protection by the Federal Monuments Office.

In the park to the north of Hornegg Castle stands the figure of “Holy Mary with Child Jesus and the Boy John”. The sculpture comes from the South Tyrolean sculptor Veit Königer , who after studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in the middle of the 18th century. was based in Graz . In his third marriage, the 61-year-old artist married the 26-year-old Barbara Scheiflein from Preding in 1791.

The sculpture was placed under protection by the Federal Monuments Office.

Pond system

The Hornegger ponds go back to a system from the Baroque period. The majority was created in the 1960s. There are now almost 30 ponds. This pond landscape offers a large number of rare animals an adequate habitat. The existence of the following ponds has been handed down from historical sources: Large mirror pond, crab pond, Tobiste pond, Haselgrabenteich.

Colluvio - chamber music at Gut Hornegg

Every year in summer, young professional musicians come to Gut Hornegg zu Colluvio, an intensive course in chamber music for violin, cello and piano. Colluvio means mishmash and, against the background of the European south-east expansion, follows the motto that music connects people. Nine to ten young people from Europe, but with a focus on Southeast Europe, will perform challenging chamber music during the ten-day course before they set off on a tour through Central and Southern Europe. The artistic director of Colluvio is the Munich cellist and music teacher Meinhard Holler, who grew up on Gut Hornegg.

The Colluvio concerts are regularly broadcast by various broadcasters. In 2010 Walter Wehmeyer produced a documentary about Colluvio on behalf of ORF with the title “Music after the war. Kosovo between trauma and a new beginning ” . This documentary has been broadcast repeatedly by ORF, BR (Bavarian TV) , WDR , NDR , SWR , 3sat , Arte , Deutsche Welle TV , Planet TV Germany.
