Music and lyrics

The songs on the soundtrack are firmly integrated into the plot of the film and in most cases continue to tell instead of interrupting them. You will thus be of the artist character in- presented, and due to the history of the work, the parts to within a Live - TV show is located, some of them as Revue numbers are designed. In terms of both content and music, the central motif of the civil rights movement and racial segregation runs through the entire album. In addition to the "white" Broadway style typical of musicals and Eurocentric bubblegum pop, traditional African-American musical styles such as soul or gospel are also repeatedly incorporated into the songs. The mood of upheaval and revolution in the story set in the 1960s is also musically supported.

Cover design

The artwork of the Standard Edition and that of the Collector's Edition show a completely different motif.

The Standard Edition has a black background. A little below the middle of the cover is the title of the film in colorful letters running in its own color, underneath it, much smaller in white, the words "Soundtrack to the Motion Picture". At the bottom the notes "Music by Marc Shaiman" and "Lyrics by Scott Wittman & Marc Shaiman" can be read in pink and white.

On the Collector's Edition, the cover has a pink background. At the top of the picture, the film title can be read in the same colorful lettering as on the conventional version. criticism

Hairspray: Soundtrack to the Motion Picture received positive reviews. It was felt that the higher budget and the greater freedom that one has with a film soundtrack as opposed to a Broadway cast recording, Marc Shaiman was best able to implement his vision of the songs on the album. The original spirit of the original John Waters story would be reflected in the music of the recast, blending with the glamor of Broadway style; the quirky lyrics and performances would be cheeky great. It was praised that the content of the work offered a good opportunity to discuss the societal problems raised with his children, but without ever raising the index finger excessively. Instead, the focus would be on having fun and having a good time while the messages are being spread. The singing performance of Queen Latifah and Michelle Pfeiffer's "devilish" performance of (The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs were particularly praised .

success

Hairspray: Soundtrack to the Motion Picture was a huge commercial success in some countries. In the USA , the album climbed to number 2 on the charts and was awarded a platinum record. It also achieved top ten positions in Australia and New Zealand with positions 5 and 7 respectively. In the German-speaking countries, sales were much worse: in Austria it was number 71, in Switzerland 46. In Germany it could not prove itself in the charts.
