Halit Edip Başer

Halit Edip Başer (* 1942 in Nizip , Gaziantep Province ) is a former Turkish General of the Army (Türk Kara Kuvetleri) , who was Vice- Chief of the General Staff from 1999 to 2000 and Commander of the 2nd Army between 2000 and 2002 .

Life

After attending school in 1961, Başer began an officer training at the Army School ( Kara Harp Okulu ) , which he completed in 1963. After a subsequent visit to the infantry school (Piyade Okulu) he found employment in various units as a platoon commander and company commander . After 1970-1972 graduate of Army Academy ( Kara Harp Akademisi ) was, it was used as field officer in the headquarters of the NATO according Brussels seconded where he was scheduling officer in the operations section. After his return he was head of the strategy department in the strategic planning department in the General Staff of Turkey and then General Secretary at the Army Headquarters , before he was last in command of the Presidential Guard Regiment.

After his promotion to brigadier general (Tuğgeneral) In 1986 he became deputy head of the intelligence department at the headquarters of the Allied Forces of NATO in southern Europe AFSOUTH ( Allied Forces Southern Europe ) in Naples and was then 1988 to 1990 commander of the 3rd Army belonging to 14 Mechanized brigade in Kars . In 1990 he was promoted to major general (Tümgeneral) and was initially deputy head of the operational planning department in the general staff and then commander of the army school before he was finally military advisor to Prime Minister Tansu Çiller .

1994 Başer was appointed Lieutenant General (Korgeneral) promoted and took over the post as commanding general of the 1st Army belonging III. Corps (III. Kolordu Komutanlığı) in Şişli . After his promotion to General (Orgeneral) in 1998 he became Commander of the Allied Land Forces of NATO in Southern Europe LANDSOUTH (Allied Land Forces Southern Europe) and then a year later on August 30, 1999 as the successor to General Hilmi Özkök Vice-Chief of the General Staff (Genelkurmay II. Başkanlığı) . He held this post until his replacement by General Mehmet Yaşar Büyükanıt on August 30, 2000. He himself then succeeded General Aytaç Yalman as commander of the 2nd Army (İkinci Ordu) in Malatya on August 30, 2000 , to which the IV. Corps in Ankara , the VI. Corps in Adana and the VII. Corps in Diyarbakır and which is responsible for the protection of Southeast Anatolia and East Anatolia as well as the borders with Syria , Iran and Iraq . He remained in this post until his retirement on August 30, 2002 and was then replaced by General Fevzi Türkeri . He was later chairman of the Center for Eurasian Strategic Studies ASAM (Avrasya Stratejik Araştırmalar Merkezi) from September 2006 to January 2007

Başer, who is married to Hülya Başer and has two children, speaks English as well as Turkish .
