The place is located about 30 kilometers south of Wels , halfway between Gmunden am Traunsee and Scharnstein in the Almtal. It is located at an altitude of around 620  m above sea level. A. at the pass crossing between Almtal in the east and the valley of the Laudach in the west. The neck is the ledge that stretches from Hacklberg  ( 789  m above sea level ) to the south and leads via Dürrnberg to Hochriedel  ( 1043  m above sea level ). After St. Konrad the Kotbach drains to the Laudach, after Scharnstein the Trambach to the Alm , whereby the Halsgraben is the left tributary of the Trambach - the western ditch is the headwaters of the Kotbach. The B 120 Scharnsteiner Straße Gmunden - Scharnstein passes  the village (around km 14).

The location comprises 20 addresses, of which 5 houses in Hals , 1 house in Hals and 14 houses in Halsgraben in Scharnstein. The municipal boundaries are so interlinked here that the two address areas mix with one another.

The area still belongs entirely to the flysch zone of the Alps, to the Almtaler and Kirchdorfer flysch mountains .

History and infrastructure

There is evidence of a late medieval fortification ( Turnperg , 1449) of the Wallseer near Dürrnberg , the exact location of which is unknown. She probably guarded the St. Konrad - Scharnstein street.

In the 18th century, the Niklmann homestead (Hals 3, St. Konrad) and the Jagergutl im Hals (Hals 4, St. Konrad) were located here on the road, to the north the Ögersölden estates (Hals 3, St. Konrad), Pöchhackersölden (Halsgraben 14, Scharnstein), and below the Trambach Eisensölden (Halsgraben 14, Scharnstein) - a Sölde was the smallest farm size (thirty-second yard), the names probably refer to people or related commercial rights.

Today the area is known as an easy hiking area (Hacklberghöhenweg) .
