Hans-Joachim Bormeister (born May 16, 1927 in Berlin ; † December 26, 2013 in Zehdenick ) was a German forester . For many years he was the head of the forest administration of the Evangelical Church in the GDR .

Life

Training and career beginnings

Hans-Joachim Bormeister belonged to the generation that was drawn into Reich labor and military service in the final phase of the Second World War , so that he was only able to complete his school education with the Abitur in 1948. He then completed his forestry studies from 1949 to 1953 at the Eberswalde Forestry Faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin . During this time he was a student of confidence Protestant student community of the faculty in Eberswalde, where he 1963 with the dissertation research on the development of vegetation in agricultural plantations in Brandenburg and in adjacent areas to Dr. rer. silv. received his doctorate .

After completing his studies in 1953, Bormeister initially worked for several years in the Templin State Forestry Company , where he headed the “ Silviculture ” department. During this time, in 1955, he also wrote his little book Forest and Wild in the Templin district .

In church service

From 1957 Bormeister dealt with the development of the forest administration of the Protestant church in the GDR . The Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg wanted to set up a forest office, whereby Bormeister initially worked as a forestry expert for the Berlin-Brandenburg Consistory and for the church chancellery of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) . The fact that after the conclusion of the military chaplaincy contract, the GDR government asked the eight East German regional churches to separate from the EKD in 1957 also contributed to the further development. But it was not until 1969 that they merged to form the Federation of Protestant Churches in the GDR (BEK), and in the same year Bormeister was made head of the forestry department in the BEK's secretariat.

Under his leadership it was possible to keep the church forests in the difficult atheistic - socialist environment under independent management by the Protestant church. Bormeister built up a church forest organization and achieved economic freedom for the church forest operations and personal relief for their employees, including Robert Hinz . In addition, he came into contact with the Lower Saxon monastery chamber through the “Iron Curtain” and through the relationships of Bishop Albrecht Schönherr also with Swedish foresters. His service files from 1957 to 1991 are now in the Evangelical Central Archive in Berlin.

Already in socialist times Bormeister had fought hard to ensure that the abbey forests of Heiligengrabe and Marienfließ , which were expropriated as part of the land reform , returned to church property , which finally happened some time after reunification .

After the turn

Bormeister was already involved in nature conservation during his active service and advocated comprehensive, sustainable forest management . During the political change in 1989 , he recognized the great opportunity for the forest and nature conservation and, as moderator of the “Round Table”, intensively supervised the establishment of the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve in 1989/1990 . He also expanded his voluntary commitment to nature conservation . He was a member of the nature conservation advisory board at the lower nature conservation authority of the Oberhavel district for two terms of office .

Since 1991 he has also been involved in the German Forest Protection Association (SDW) and was one of the founding members of the SDW regional association of Brandenburg, which he helped to build up in the following years. Bormeister initiated numerous projects to protect the forest. From 1992 to 2000 he was also an active member of the SDW executive board and headed the “Forests, Nature Conservation and Landscape Management” working group. The protection of the avenues , the proliferation of forests and the return of the Prussian forest were particularly important to him . During the excursion in 2007, Bormeister handed over his position as working group leader to Helm-Eckart Hink. Hink had already replaced him on June 18, 2006 as a member of the extended SDW board.

Bormeister lived in Zehdenick , where he died on December 26, 2013.

Honors

For his all-German work in East and West for the forest, Bormeister was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on March 5, 1999 , which State Minister Gunter Fritsch presented to him during a ceremony in the Old Forest Academy in Eberswalde. The Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald honored his longstanding voluntary commitment to the protection of the forest and the SDW by awarding it its highest award, the gold pin of honor, in 2007. Bormeister was also an honorary member of the Association of German Foresters (BDF) .
