Hans-Winfried Jüngling

Hans-Winfried ("Winni") Jüngling SJ (born July 12, 1938 in Breslau ; † October 4, 2018 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German Jesuit and theologian .

Life

Hans-Winfried Jüngling was the second child of the engineer Johannes Jüngling and his wife Maria geb. Prettier. He had an older sister, Christa-Maria. In 1945 his father was recruited into the Volkssturm and fell in the defense of Breslau. In 1946 his mother and two children were relocated to Freden an der Leine in Lower Saxony . Hans-Winfried Jüngling attended elementary school there and then became a boarding school student at the Collegium Georgianum , the Bischöflichen Gymnasialkonvikt in Duderstadt .

After graduating from high school on April 14, 1958, he joined the Society of Jesus and completed his novitiate in the German Eastern Province on Jakobsberg in Bingen am Rhein . Between 1960 and 1963 he completed philosophical studies at the Berchmanskolleg in Pullach near Munich. After completing his master's degree in Berlin , he studied theology at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen from 1964 to 1968 . On July 29, 1967, he was ordained a priest in the Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomew in Frankfurt am Main. He learned Biblical Hebrew at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and completed a licentiate in Biblical Studies. After an additional oriental studies, he was on 18 February 1977 in Rome Doctor of Biblical Studies (Dr. in re biblica) PhD . His dissertation “Judges 19 - a plea for royalty. Stylistic analysis of the narration of tendencies Ri 19.1-30a; 21, 25 ”was published in Rome in 1981 as volume 84 of the Analecta Biblica series.

Jüngling had been a lecturer for exegesis of the Old Testament in St. Georgen since 1976. He completed his habilitation at the Sankt Georgen University of Applied Sciences in 1983. In 1985 he was appointed Professor of Exegesis of the Old Testament in St. Georgen. From 1998 to 2000 he was Vice Rector of the university. Jüngling did research at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Jerusalem (1979/80 and 1986/87) and held several visiting professorships at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. In 2006 he retired .

Until his death he was chairman of the board of the Sankt Georgen University Foundation .

Act

The main teaching and research area were all genres of Old Testament books, from the Pentateuch to the prophets and psalms to Job , the Book of Proverbs and Jesus Sirach . He was committed to gender-equitable language and the overcoming of anti-Judaic prejudices in exegesis and theology. He was a member of the governing body for the revision of the standard translation of the Holy Scriptures (2006–2016).

Hans-Winfried Jüngling was involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land . In 2002 he was appointed Knight of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Carlo Furno and invested in Görlitz on October 5, 2002 by Bishop Anton Schlembach , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy . He was an officer of the order and from 2002 to 2017 prior of the Commandery Father Maximilian Kolbe in Frankfurt am Main.
