In 1686 he went against the Turks under his cousin, Field Marshal General Hans Adam von Schöning , and was knighted for his achievements as a Knight of the Order de la Générosité . In 1691 he became a colonel and for the next few years commanded the cuirassier regiment. In 1693/95 Schöning was again in the campaign against the Turks. In November 1703 he became a brigadier .
