Hanspeter Lebrument (born June 21, 1941 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss publisher . With the newspaper Südostschweiz and the associated Somedia (formerly Südostschweiz Mediengruppe) he dominates the media landscape in Graubünden , Glarus and the Rhine Valley .

Activities and offices

After working as a teacher in St. Gallen, Lebrument decided to switch to journalism at the age of 23 and in 1964 became a news editor for the St. Galler Tagblatt . At the end of the 1960s he moved to the Emmentaler Blatt in Langnau as a foreign and sports editor and in 1971 as a foreign editor to the Bündner Zeitung in Chur . There he created a new concept for the newspaper and was appointed editor- in- chief in 1974. In 1981 he became editor-in-chief of Ringier's newly founded news magazine Die Woche in Zurich for a short time , but failed, and the paper also died shortly afterwards. Lebrument returned to Chur in 1982 as director of the brothers Rudolf and Werner Gasser, who owned half of the Gasser AG Druck und Verlag, the publisher of the Bündner Zeitung .

The following years were marked by a conflict between the brothers Rudolf, head of the publishing house, and Werner Gasser, head of the printing company. In order to increase the management's freedom of action, Lebrument arranged for the brothers' shares to be transferred to a foundation, which thus had the majority in the publishing company. Rudolf Gasser, who died in 1999, determined in his will that Lebrument should in future represent the majority of votes in the foundation. Werner Gasser tried unsuccessfully to contest the will. In 2000 Lebrument was able to acquire Rudolf Gasser's share and, soon after, Werner Gasser's share.

As publishing director and later as owner, Lebrument expanded Gasser AG Druck und Verlag to " Somedia AG" (formerly "Südostschweiz Medien AG") and the Bündner Zeitung to become Südostschweiz . This includes nine (up to 2013 13) daily newspapers in the cantons of St. Gallen, Graubünden, Schwyz and Glarus as well as the Principality of Liechtenstein .

In 1994 Lebrument failed to run for a seat on the Council of States as a liberal .

Lebrument was from 1997 to 2001 and since 2005 (as Vice-President) he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Dispatch Agency . From September 2003 to September 2016 he was President of the Swiss Media Association , after which he was appointed Honorary President.

On June 1, 2010, Lebrument gave up the operational management of Südostschweiz Medien (today Somedia) in Chur in order to concentrate on the role of publisher and chairman of the board of directors. He was succeeded on June 1st by Andrea Masüger, the former editor-in-chief of Südostschweiz .

Lebrument was last lieutenant colonel in the Swiss Army .

Family and activity of children

Hanspeter Lebrument lives in Malans GR , is married and has three grown children: Pesche Lebrument is the youngest and was editor-in-chief and moderator of Tele Südostschweiz . Susanne Lebrument was the head of the publisher's own advertising agency and Silvio Lebrument, the oldest, was the head of radio and television programs. At the beginning of June 2010 it was reported that the publisher's two sons and his daughter were active in the management and editing of Südostschweiz Medien.

Criticism and miscellaneous

He is criticized by various media people for his monopoly position. Above all, Roger Schawinski criticizes him for saying that freedom of expression cannot be guaranteed if there is only one publisher in a region.

A portrait of Lebrument entitled Der Alte vom Berg , published in the Tages-Anzeiger in March 2018 , was withdrawn by the Tamedia publishing house on the grounds that the sources were largely anonymous, that Lebrument did not have a say and that various negative value judgments were not substantiated .
