The haplogroup Q is a haplogroup of the mitochondria in human genetics .
Today, the mitochondrial DNA haplogroup Q is found in the southern Pacific region, especially in New Guinea and Melanesia . Haplogroup Q is very diverse and is common among Papuans and the Melanesian population. It is deduced that the haplogroup originated about 50,000 years ago. The frequency of this haplogroup among the population of the Wallacea Islands in eastern Indonesia is quite high, indicating a genetic relationship between the populations of these islands and the indigenous peoples of New Guinea. Haplogroup Q has also been found, albeit at a very low frequency, among the modern populations of Sunda , Micronesia, and Polynesia .
