Hartmut Schmidt (church musician)

Hartmut Schmidt (born May 13, 1930 in Düren ; † June 22, 2006 in Düsseldorf ) was a German church musician , choir director and university professor .

Life

Schmidt completed his studies in Protestant church music at the regional church music school of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland and at the Northwest German Music Academy Detmold with Michael Schneider and Kurt Thomas in 1953 with the A-exam . This was followed by a study stay with Gaston Litaize in Paris.

From 1955 to 1976 Hartmut Schmidt was cantor and organist at the Matthäikirche in Düsseldorf. During this time he took over the “Niederrheinische Chorgemeinschaft” founded by his father, KMD Ferdinand Schmidt. 1970 it convened the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland to regional church music director . Since 1976 he has been professor of choral conducting and director of the Protestant Church Music department at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf . In this role he shaped several generations of church musicians and choir directors. Hartmut Schmidt experienced great national and international recognition as the choir director of the municipal music association in Düsseldorf , which he directed from 1964 to 1995.

In 1989 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by the Federal President for his work in the Municipal Music Association and his services to the musical life of the city of Düsseldorf .

Under his artistic responsibility, the choir of the Städtisches Musikverein zu Düsseldorf has been responsible for several internationally awarded recordings (EMI / Warner, DECCA, Universal), led by renowned conductors ( Wolfgang Sawallisch , Riccardo Chailly , Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos , Bernard Haitink , James Conlon , Bernhard Klee) ) and with the participation of top orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the German Symphony Orchestra (RSO) Berlin, alongside the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra.

Hartmut Schmidt is the father of a daughter and the bass baritone Andreas Schmidt .
