Bernd Neubauer is Professor of History in Berlin . He specializes in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. His wife Lena recently moved to live with him from Bavaria. You will have a happy and harmonious marriage. However, during his long-distance relationship with Lena, Bernd had started an affair with the waitress Melanie. But for Bernd it is no problem to get both relationships under one roof. During a trip to the state of Brandenburg , Bernd and Lena discover a quaint, old house that they fall in love with. Old Maschke has lived here since she was a child. Now she is a widow and alone. Bernd and Lena buy the house from her and grant her lifelong right of residence. Now Bernd only needs one child for a perfect life. He wants the child from Melanie, who would, however, prefer to keep her independence. Nevertheless, she hopes that Bernd will part with his wife at some point. However, Bernd feels right at home in his situation. As an early riser, he leaves the marriage bed early in the morning and meets Melanie for breakfast.
When Lena finally suspects that Bernd is hiding a secret, she follows him in a taxi one of those mornings. She confronts Bernd with her suspicions and he confesses to the affair with Melanie. A child should now save the marriage with Lena. Lena did not get pregnant for years. Now the couple goes to a doctor to check Bernd's fertility. The relationship with Melanie is now more difficult because he is under constant observation by Lena. When Melanie wants to take up a job offer to Hamburg , they end their relationship. Bernd does not want to admit that, but looks forward to a bright future with Lena in the newly renovated house.
During the renovation work, his wife Lena spends a night of love with the Polish worker Andrzej, while Bernd has a working meeting with an Israeli history professor. Melanie and her best friend Linda also appear at the inauguration ceremony. Bernd learns from Linda that Melanie is pregnant. The next time he went to the doctor, however, Bernd was diagnosed with the fact that he was unable to procreate . When he comes home confused, he learns that his wife Lena also has good news for him. She is pregnant too.

Haus und Kind is a co-production by Arte and Bayerischer Rundfunk . The shooting took place in summer 2008 in Berlin, Seegrehna and Ahrenshoop . The premiere took place in May 2009 as part of the 19th film art festival Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Schwerin. The film was first broadcast on German television on August 28, 2009 in the Arte program.
