Hedwig Francillo-Kauffmann (born Hedwig Clementine Franz (e) l , stage name Francillo Kauffmann , married name de Souza Guimarães , born September 30, 1878 in Vienna , died April 11, 1948 in Rio de Janeiro ) was an Austrian soprano.

On September 30, 1878 she was born out of wedlock to the houseworker Maria Franzl (born November 30, 1856 in Vienna- Braunhirschen ) in Ober Sankt Veit . The caretaker of the Postsparkasse Karl Kaufmann (June 27, 1854– July 10, 1925) was registered as the child's father eleven years later. The parents' marriage had previously taken place on November 18, 1889. She studied opera singing with Franziska Mütter (who is a good friend of Arthur Schnitzler's ) in Vienna, with Aglaja Orgéni in Dresden and in Milan . She made her debut in the 1898/1899 season when she was engaged at the City Theater in Stettin . From 1899–1902 she was engaged at the Hoftheater Wiesbaden , 1902/1903 at the Hoftheater Munich , 1903–1908 at the Berlin Court Opera and Komische Oper. From 1908 until the end of the 1912 season she worked at the Vienna Court Opera. In 1909 she performed here together with Enrico Caruso . At the end of the work at this house she was appointed chamber singer . 1912–1917 she was at the Stadttheater Hamburg . Here she married the Brazilian diplomat Wenceslau Souza-Guimarães in July 1916. Immediately after their wedding, she inaugurated the animal drinking fountain she donated in Vienna, which at that time was still set up behind the Secession , but has since been moved. In the years that followed her marriage, she only appeared on guest performance and concert tours. In 1921 she visited Brazil with her husband and a two-year-old son - also Wenceslau. In 1927 she lived as a teacher in Berlin . In Salomon Wininger s Big Jewish National Biography , Volume 3, 1928, p 426 will run as a Jew. That is probably the reason why she was stateless in 1938 - her husband had died and she continued to live in Berlin - and had to endure the increasing harassment against the Jewish population, even though the Brazilian ambassador stood up for her. The following year she accepted an appointment at the Mozarteum in Salzburg , where she began teaching on April 15, 1939. On October 10, 1947, she emigrated to Rio de Janeiro to live with her son. There she died the following year.

Individual evidence

  1. Although she is repeatedly mentioned as “Kaufmann”, most of the more official sources, such as the book she wrote, the entry certificate to Brazil in 1947 and the entries in Lehmann's Viennese address book are consistently double f, Kauffmann.
  2. The birth entry says Franzel, but the mother's parents are listed as Franzl. At the wedding of the mother with the child's father, the mother's name is also written without an "e".
  3. Until Felix Gundacker found her birth entry ( https://data.matricula-online.eu/de/oesterreich/wien/13-ober-st-veit/01-12/?pg=31 ) there was disagreement about her date of birth : In Eisenbach's large biographical lexicon of the German stage , her birthday is given as December 30, 1879. The https://www.musiklexikon.ac.at/ml/musik_F/Francillo-Kaufmann_Hedwig.xml names September 30, 1881, as does the ÖBL.
