Heinrich Wilhelm von Weltzien (born May 4, 1759 on Finkenberg near Rostock , † July 16, 1827 in Liegnitz ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commander of the Cosel fortress .

Life

His parents were the heir of Finkenberg Alexander Ernst von Weltzien (* 1685; † 14 December 1762) and his wife Johanna Luice, born von Woldeck (* 7 March 1719; † 20 March 1784) from the Gnewikow family . She was the daughter of Christoffel von Woldeck (1667-1735) and Ilsabe Hedwig von Weltzien (1683-1725). The generals Alexander Friedrich von Woldeck and Hans Christoph von Woldeck were his uncles.

Military career

Weltzien came to Berlin as a cadet on May 18, 1772 and to the Academie militaire on March 5, 1773 . On March 1, 1778, he was employed as a second lieutenant in the Grenadier Battalion "Gillern" of the Prussian Army . In the War of the Bavarian Succession he took part in the battle near Lewin. With the dissolution of the grenadier battalions on June 1, 1787, he was transferred to the "Gillern" fusilier battalion. Weltzien was promoted to Prime Lieutenant there in mid-February 1789 and joined the Upper Silesian Fusilier Brigade as a staff captain on December 2, 1791 . During the First Coalition War , he fought in the skirmishes near Hochheim, Alsheim, Limbach, Tann, Busenberg, Neustadt, Türkheim, Obernheim, Deidesheim, Schorleberg and the battles near Kaiserslautern and Pirmasens as well as the siege of Verdun . For this Weltzien received the order Pour le Mérite on June 7, 1794 . On September 30, 1797 he became a major in the fusilier battalion "von Bülow".

In 1803 he had a serious clash with his boss, then Lieutenant Colonel Friedrich Wilhelm von Bülow . For this he was sentenced on February 18, 1803 by a court martial to six months' arrest in the fortress of Graudenz . After his release, he joined the 1st Warsaw Infantry Regiment on July 9, 1803. During the Fourth Coalition War Weltzien was captured in the battle near Halle, interned in Nancy , but released at the end of July 1807 after the Peace of Tilsit .

Back in Prussia, Weltzien was appointed commander of the Fusilier Battalion in the 2nd West Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 7 on December 10, 1808 , and was promoted to lieutenant colonel on May 20, 1809 . On February 16, 1810 Weltzien was given command of the light troops of the Lower Silesian Brigade. In the same capacity, he joined the Upper Silesian Brigade on May 24, 1811. On February 8, 1812, he was promoted to colonel and on March 11, 1812, he was entrusted with the management of the business as the commandant of Glatz Fortress . On April 11, 1813, he was appointed fortress commander.

In the run-up to the Wars of Liberation , Weltzien became a division general of the Silesian Landwehr on May 26, 1813. During the war he took part in the transition at Wartenburg and in the battles at Großgörschen , Bautzen , Katzbach and Leipzig . For Wartenburg he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class, for Leipzig with the Cross 1st Class and the Russian Order of St. Stanislaus 2nd Class. On December 27, 1813, he was transferred to the Erfurt Fortress as a commandant , but on May 31, 1815, he was transferred to the Koblenz Fortress as a commandant . In addition, he was promoted to major general on May 31, 1815 with a patent from June 2, 1815. On October 3, 1815, he became inspector of the Landwehr in the government department of Opole, and on July 31, 1817, he became the commandant of the Cosel Fortress . There he received his retirement as lieutenant general on June 13, 1825, and received the service cross on June 18, 1826 . He died on July 16, 1827 in Liegnitz and was buried on July 19, 1827.

He married on May 1, 1796 in Breslau Marie Agnes Freiin von Stillfried-Rattonitz (* September 21, 1772, † December 7, 1837) from the Fuchswinkel family. The couple had several children:
