Helmut S. Ruppert

Helmut S. Ruppert (born May 18, 1944 in Engelskirchen ; † December 16, 2018 in Bergisch Gladbach ) was a German journalist and publicist .

Life

Ruppert studied among other things Catholic theology in Cologne and Bonn and passed the state examination in 1968 with the thesis “Mission school between yesterday and tomorrow. The development of the mission school in West Africa , illustrated using the example of southern Nigeria ”. He then studied history , geography and education in Cologne and Bonn . From summer to autumn 1966 he lived as part of a work stay in central western Nigeria. In 1967 he was a founding member of the Society for Africa Issues with Elimar Freiherr von Fürstenberg

In 1970 he completed a traineeship and was an editor at the Catholic News Agency (KNA) in Bonn. In 1979 he moved to Deutsche Welle and was deputy head of the German program from 1992 to 1996. From 1996 to 2005 he was the successor to Karl Heinz Hock as the editor-in-chief of the Catholic News Agency (KNA) ; his successor was Ludwig Ring-Eifel in 2005 . Ruppert was chairman of the Catholic Press Association .

Ruppert was involved in numerous organizations, including the International PEN / Center for Writers in Exile in German-speaking Countries, as well as on the advisory boards of the Edith Stein Society Germany and the KNA Promedia Foundation as well as the Christian Democratic Workers' Union (CDA) . He was a member of the Society of Catholic Publicists in Germany (GKP) . He was a member of the WKSt.V. Unitas-Salia Bonn ( Unitas ). He was Colonel d. R. in the corps à la suite of the Cologne carnival society Nippeser Bürgerwehr from 1903 in Cologne-Nippes .

In spring 2006 Ruppert received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on ribbon for his diverse socio-political and voluntary commitment . In 2006 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed " Knight of the Order of Gregory ".

He had been married to Sally Ruppert-Kire, a native of Ugandan , since 1970 and had four children. Ruppert died in December 2018 at the age of 74 after a long and serious illness in Bergisch Gladbach. He was buried on December 27, 2018 in the Bensberg cemetery.
