Herbert Fischer (born October 12, 1882 in Stuttgart , † October 23, 1939 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf ) was a German officer , most recently a general of the infantry in the army of the Wehrmacht .

On March 22, 1901, Fischer joined the Grenadier Regiment "Queen Olga" (1st Württembergisches) No. 119 in his hometown as a lieutenant . From February 1, 1909 to September 30, 1912 he served as an adjutant of the 1st Battalion, in the meantime became a first lieutenant on June 16, 1910 and then rose as such to regimental adjutant.

With the beginning of the First World War , Fischer was ordered to the German military missions in the Ottoman Empire from August 3, 1914 , where he served in the Ottoman Army throughout the war .

After the end of the war and his return home, Fischer was first transferred to army officers from February 20 to November 24, 1919 and then taken over into the Reichswehr . Here he first served in the Reichswehr Ministry in Berlin and from October 1, 1920 he was directly subordinate to the chief of Army Command Hans von Seeckt for one year as an adjutant . Fischer then took over as chief of the 2nd company of the 6th Infantry Regiment in Lübeck until January 1, 1924 . This was then followed by his transfer back to the Reichswehr Ministry , where he worked for the next few years in the Troops Office (TA). On February 1, 1928, Fischer switched back to the troop service and was commander of the 1st Battalion of the 17th Infantry Regiment in Braunschweig . Fischer gave up this command on March 30, 1930 and then moved up to the regimental staff. On November 1, 1930 Fischer returned again to the Reichswehr Ministry , where he was appointed head of the Foreign Armies Department (T 3) in the Troops Office. He gave up this post on March 31, 1933 and then acted as a military attaché in Budapest , based in Rome .

After the conversion of the Reichswehr to the Wehrmacht, Fischer was recalled from his post in Rome and on October 6, 1936, he was commander of the 31st Infantry Division . Half a year later he was released from this command and made available to the Commander in Chief of the Army . As characterized general of the infantry, Fischer officially retired on October 31, 1937. His actual, strictly camouflaged mission was within the Einsatzgruppen of the Condor Legion . His special area of ​​responsibility consisted in the management of the defense within " Kampfgruppe 88 " for the intelligence service of the deployment of the German combat squadrons to suppress the Spanish republic.

He died shortly after the beginning of the Second World War .
