Herbert Meier (Author)

Herbert Meier (born August 29, 1928 in Solothurn ; † September 21, 2018 in Zollikon ) was a Swiss writer and translator .

Life

Herbert Meier studied literature , art history and philosophy at the universities in Basel , Vienna and Freiburg im Üechtland. At the University of Freiburg he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1954 with a thesis on the dramas by Ernst Barlach and then worked as a teacher and lecturer in Paris and Poitiers . After returning to Switzerland, he trained to be an actor in Basel and worked as a dramaturge and actor at the theater in Biel . From 1955 he worked as a freelance writer in Zurich . From 1977 to 1982 Meier was chief dramaturge at the Zürcher Schauspielhaus; From 1994 to 1998 he hosted the show Sternstunde Philosophie on Swiss television .

Herbert Meier was primarily a playwright; however, he also wrote novels , poems and essays . An important part of his work are numerous translations of both classical and modern pieces, mainly from French.

He was a member of the German-speaking Swiss PEN Center and the Association of Authors of Switzerland . Meier died a few weeks after his 90th birthday in Zollikon ZH.
