Hercules and the Amazon Women (original title: Hercules and the Amazon Women ) is an American fantasy film by Bill L. Norton from 1994. It is the first part of a five-part film series that followed from 1995 to 1999 the television series Hercules .

action

The demigod Hercules returns to his home village because the wedding of his best friend Iolaos is imminent. After they have defeated the Hydra sent by Hera together , the two companions stop by Hercules' mother, who shortly afterwards also receives a visit from Zeus , the demigod's father. Later, mother and son have dinner with Iolaos and his soon-to-be wife Ania, where they are visited by a stranger named Pithus, who asks Hercules to help the inhabitants of his village against wild beasts.

Together with Pithus, Hercules and Iolaos go to the village of the stranger, whose inhabitants are exclusively male. In a forest there is a fight between the two companions and the beasts, who turn out to be amazons wearing masks , fatally injuring Iolaos and bringing the captured Hercules to their queen Hippolyte . In the following conversation, the Amazon queen, fueled by Hera, justifies her war against the men by saying that they only want to use and control the women. The patriarchal-minded Hercules then wants to rethink his view of women, but also points out to Hippolyte her own prejudices against men. Hercules later breaks out of prison and returns to the village. Meanwhile, the army of the Amazons is getting ready for a nightly attack on the villagers, in which the women warriors intend to fertilize each other according to tradition. Since the demigod has meanwhile given men advice on how to respect women, the opposite sexes, as well as Hercules and Hippolyte, come together through love, which ends their enmity.

The conflict seems to be resolved. Hera, who is filled with hatred of the son of Zeus and all men due to her husband's infidelity, does not want to be satisfied with the end of the war, so she goes to the Amazon queen and orders a merciless attack on the villagers. Hercules decides to leave the village in order to only direct the wrath of the goddess on himself. The chasing Pithus succumbs to the pursuer's dagger. Arrived at a cliff, the possessed Amazon queen then puts the demigod in a final fight. The man in love with her gives up, however, and tells Hera that she could kill him because a life without Hippolyte would be unbearable for him, whereupon the goddess, taking the opportunity to seek revenge, plunges Hippolyte's body into the depths.

Sadly about what happened, Hercules goes to his father Zeus, who grants his son a request. The time is turned back, Hercules and his mother have dinner with Iolaos and his soon-to-be wife Ania and when they visit a stranger, Hercules explains that the inhabitants of his village can solve their difficulties themselves by trying to be friends with the attackers .

criticism

For the lexicon of international film , Hercules and the Amazon Army was an “action film” that “is only loosely based on ancient myth” and, with its “modern fantasy touch , has nothing in common with the Italian sandal films of the 1960s”.
