“I don't search, I find.” Picasso's bon mot doesn't quite fit Hermann Kleinknecht, who strolls through cellars, attics or the city until something falls into his hands and catches the eye. Suddenly there is a thing that wants to connect with the finder. From Kleinknecht's early Rome scholarship in the Villa Massimo, there was only a series of photos of small finds that caught his eye while wandering the streets: rubbish from civilization pressed into the asphalt, which becomes precious in the lens section and when the camera is photographed, mysterious remains a culture that reminds me of the equally gruesome and fascinating as well as the haunting narrative of the frozen bodies from Herculaneum . Since then, Kleinknecht has found sculptures, photos, family bequests or even excitingly aged paper.

He became known for his large sculptures in public spaces, difficult-to-understand geometrical bodies or puzzling settings in a pre-structured environment. In his exhibitions, Kleinknecht develops installations from his sculptures and found objects. In addition, he kept making series of independent drawings.

Films were also made after early performances . In the 1990s, Kleinknecht began - initially together with Kurt Benning - to record video portraits of a wide variety of people, in which the sitters tell about their lives or things that touch them.
