Hermann von Brandenstein (General, 1821)

Carl Hermann von Brandenstein (born August 23, 1821 in Leipzig , † July 17, 1891 in Dresden ) was a Saxon lieutenant general . At the time of the German War he mediated between Saxony, Austria and Prussia.

Life

origin

Hermann came from the Thuringian noble family Brandenstein . He was the son of the Prussian lieutenant colonel Karl Adolf Freiherr von Brandenstein (1778-1854) and his wife Frederike Albertine Adelheid, born von Wietersheim (1789-1857). His sister Karoline († 1848) married Robert von Beust , Herr auf Blankenau.

Military career

After studying at the University of Leipzig , where he became a member of the Corps Saxonia Leipzig in 1839 , Brandenstein embarked on an officer career in the Saxon Army . In 1847 he was second lieutenant in Dresden's rider barracks. In 1851 he was promoted to prime lieutenant and adjutant . He joined the General Staff in 1857 as Rittmeister , served in a cavalry regiment and was adjutant to Minister of War Bernhard von Rabenhorst in 1861/62 . As a major , Brandenstein became the Saxon representative of the IX on April 1, 1863 . Army Corps appointed to the Federal Military Commission. Promoted to colonel in the War Ministry in 1866 , he was appointed Saxon military plenipotentiary in Berlin that same year.

In mid-December 1866, Brandenstein stated in a letter to the draft constitution of the North German Confederation that a complete acceptance of this constitution would mean the abandonment of any military independence. In his position as military plenipotentiary, he was also one of the four Saxon plenipotentiaries in the Federal Council of the North German Confederation , alongside the Finance and Foreign Minister Richard von Friesen , the Ministerial Director in the Interior Ministry Christian Albert Weinlig and the secret finance councilor Hans von Thümmel . As major general (since January 24, 1870) Brandenstein held these offices until April 1870 and was then put into temporary retirement for health reasons. His successor in office was named Bernhard von Holleben von Normann .

After the founding of the German Empire , in the first half of 1873, Brandenstein represented Saxon interests as an experienced diplomat in the newly founded Federal Council before he finally resigned from military and diplomatic service. In 1874 he was given the character of Lieutenant General.
