Hermann Ernst von Rex (born September 12, 1821 in Lautitz ; † August 29, 1901 in Schandau ) was a Saxon lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Hermann was a son of the state elder of Upper Lusatia Ernst Karl von Rex (1777-1833) and his second wife Luise, née Rodewitz (1789-1858). He still had nine siblings.

Military career

After visiting the cadet house in Dresden , Rex was transferred to the infantry regiment "Prince Maximilian" of the Saxon army as porter ensign. With promotion to lieutenant on December 20, 1840 he was transferred to Zwickau to the infantry regiment "Prince Georg" and the following year he was transferred to the Guard Division in Dresden. With the dissolution of this division, Rex was transferred to the "Crown Prince" brigade in 1848 and advanced to first lieutenant in 1849 while being assigned to the body infantry brigade . As such he took part in the suppression of the Dresden May Uprising and for his work King Friedrich August II awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Military Order of St. Henry on May 27, 1849 .

After demobilization , Rex was appointed adjutant of the 15th Infantry Battalion in 1850 . In 1856 he was promoted to captain and company commander in the 14th Infantry Battalion. At the beginning of the war against Prussia he became a major in 1866 and during the campaign he was in command of the headquarters of Crown Prince Albert . After his return home, Rex was briefly assigned to the governor of Dresden, the Prussian general of the infantry von Bonin , until he was appointed wing adjutant of the king on April 1, 1869 and promoted to lieutenant colonel in this position . During the mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , Rex initially received command of the replacement battalion of the 1st (body) grenadier regiment No. 100. On August 19, 1870 he was appointed commander of the mobile regiment, where he was on Arrived September 22, 1870. At that time his association was in front of Paris . During an attack by units of General Briand on the night of November 29th to 30th, 1870, Rex suffered losses of six officers , 153 men and one gun .

Awarded the Iron Cross II. Class, Rex returned to the garrison in Dresden after the war and on May 31, 1875 was entrusted with the command of the 4th Infantry Brigade No. 48 in Leipzig . Promoted to major general on September 11, 1875, he was commander of this large formation and, in this capacity, was awarded the Crown Order II. Class with a star. In approval of his leave request , he joined on 20 March 1878 in retirement and received on 20 April 1900, the character as a lieutenant general.
