Hermann Otto Ludwig von Schmeling (born February 3, 1822 in Graudenz ; † July 2, 1896 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commander of Posen .

Life

Hermann was a son of the Prussian major Gustav von Schmeling (1790-1832) and his wife Auguste, née Hohoff (1797-1880).

Career

After visiting the cadet houses in Kulm and Berlin , Schmeling was transferred to the 39th Infantry Regiment (7th Reserve Regiment) of the Prussian Army on August 8, 1839, as characterized portepeef ensign. He graduated from the division school in Trier , advanced to secondary lieutenant by mid-January 1842, and from July 1848 was assigned to the rifle factory in Saarn for six months . On February 1, 1849 he was appointed Adjutant of the 1st Battalion and in this position he rose to Prime Lieutenant in early May 1854 . From October 1854 to June 1855 Schmeling was assigned to the Central Gymnastics Institute. He became a good fencer, rider, swimmer, and gymnast. On May 31, 1859 he was promoted to captain and in mid-August 1860 appointed chief of the 9th Company. Shortly afterwards, on October 18, 1860, he was transferred to the Emperor Alexander Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 1 . As chief of the 1st company, he took part in the coronation celebrations of King Wilhelm I in Königsberg in October of the following year .

During the war against Austria Schmeling led his company in 1866 at Soor and Königgrätz . After the war he was promoted to major on November 1, 1866 and in mid-May 1867 appointed commander of the 2nd battalion. As such, he fought during the war against France in 1870/71 in the battles at Gravelotte , Beaumont and Sedan as well as in the siege of Paris and the storming of Le Bourget . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , he was promoted to colonel after the peace treaty until the beginning of September 1873 and was transferred to the army officers on June 9, 1874 with his previous uniform, conferring the rank and fees of regimental commander. On July 18, 1874, Schmeling was initially assigned to represent the commander of the 2nd Magdeburg Infantry Regiment No. 27 . From September 15, 1874 to May 12, 1880 he served as regimental commander and was then promoted to major general commander of the 15th Infantry Brigade . This was followed on May 10, 1884 as a commander of Mainz until Schmeling was reassigned to the officers of the army on March 26, 1885. On April 14, 1885 Schmeling received his appointment as commandant of Posen and on April 18, 1885 the character of lieutenant general. Under the award of the star's Red Eagle II he was on 14 March 1887. Class with oak board for disposition made.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Le Bourget, Kaiser Wilhelm II awarded him the Order of the Crown, First Class, on October 30, 1895 . He died on July 2, 1896 in Berlin and was buried four days later in the Matthäi cemetery .

In his assessment of 1879, General von Blumenthal wrote : “Colonel von Schmeling has become a very capable commander, who has brought his regiment into excellent shape in every respect. Even if he is not very agile in spirit, he always acts sensibly, firmly and consistently and thus has an excellent effect on the business. "

Schmeling married on January 3, 1861 in the Netherlands Rosamunde Berghaus (1832-1919), a daughter of the professor of geography Berghaus. The couple had a son:
