Higher Power is an English hardcore punk / melodic hardcore band from Leeds .

history

The brothers Jimmy ( vocals , bass ) and Alex Wizard ( drums ) moved from Aylesbury to Leeds in 2014 . According to Jimmy Wizard, the two were about to move there because Leeds "has long been the center of British hardcore and punk ". The city also produced the Sisters of Mercy and the surrounding county of Yorkshire produced bands such as Bring Me the Horizon , Asking Alexandria and While She Sleeps . The two musicians started writing music and just wanted to record a demo . A short time later, guitarists Louis Hardy and Max Harper joined the group, whose name comes from a song by the band Subzero . After the search for a suitable singer was unsuccessful, the band brought their mutual friend Ethan Wilkinson into the band as bassist, while Jimmy Wizard concentrated on the vocals from then on. Curiously, Wilkinson had yet to learn his instrument.

Higher Power released a self-titled demo on February 1, 2015, before the EP Space to Breathe followed on August 20 of the same year via Neutral World Records . A year later the band played their first tour on the east coast of the United States . On May 19, 2017, Higher Power released their debut album Soul Structure via Flatspot Records . The US magazine Revolver led Soul Structure on their list of the 20 best albums of the year 2017 in tenth place. A year later the band played at the Download Festival and the Vainstream Rockfest . In spring 2019 the band toured the USA with Knocked Loose , The Acacia Strain and Harm's Way . At a concert in New York City , Higher Power's instruments were stolen. Thanks to donations from their fans, the band was able to buy new equipment and carry on.

In the summer of 2019, appearances at the festivals Reading and Leeds , Summer Breeze and Two Thousand Trees followed , before Higher Power was signed by Roadrunner Records in September 2019 . The second studio album 27 Miles Underwater was released on January 24, 2020 . Appearances at the Download Festival and Hellfest are announced for summer 2020 .

style

When they founded the band, the Wizard brothers aimed to musically break out of the limited possibilities of hardcore punk. Jimmy Wizard told Metal Hammer that the influences of the band went from their role models like Deftones and Alice in Chains to alternative rock of the 1990s and hip-hop to pop and power pop . Stefan Reuter from Visions magazine compared Higher Power musically with bands like Snapcase , Leeway or Quicksand and Jimmy Wizards vocals with Perry Farrell ( Jane's Addiction ) or Daryl Taberski (Snapcase).
