Hilde Rössel-Majdan

Hildegard Maria Rössel-Majdan (born January 30, 1921 in Moosbierbaum ; † December 15, 2010 in Vienna ) was an Austrian opera singer (alto).

Life

Hilde Rössel-Majdan studied singing at the Vienna Music Academy from 1945 to 1949 , a. a. with her father-in-law Karl Rössel-Majdan (1885–1948). She has performed as a singer since 1946. Her voice, a low alto pitch (contralto) with a special timbre, was particularly suitable for solo parts in baroque cantatas. Even her appearance in J. S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion under the direction of Wilhelm Furtwängler brought her a significant success. In 1950 she was engaged by the Vienna State Opera and made her debut as a soloist on September 18, 1951 as the voice of Antonia's mother in Hoffmann's stories in the Theater an der Wien . All in all, she performed 62 roles in 1,553 performances at the Vienna State Opera. Among other things, she took on the part of Mercedes 65 times , 194 times that of Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro and 172 times that of Annina in Der Rosenkavalier . From 1955 she was a member of the ensemble. Her last appearance took place on November 22nd, 1976 in Moses und Aron .

Rössel-Majdan has also performed in La Scala in Milan , Covent Garden in London and other opera scenes. She took part in the Salzburg Festival from 1954 , and was later invited to the Edinburgh Festival and the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence . On September 20, 1962, she was appointed chamber singer.

From 1966 to 1972 she taught at the Johann Joseph Fux Conservatory in Graz , where she was appointed associate professor for lieder and oratorio singing in 1970. From 1972 until her retirement in 1991 she worked at the Vienna Music Academy, since 1976 as a full professor. Her students included Wolfgang Holzmair , Alexander Kaimbacher , Edith Lienbacher and Marit Sauramo.

Rössel-Majdan was married to the cultural scientist Karl Rössel-Majdan (1916–2000). She was buried in the cemetery of the Simmering fire hall (Department 2, Group 2, Ring 3, Number 15).

Her voice was recorded on numerous sound recordings. In addition to opera recordings ( Strauss ' Der Rosenkavalier , Die Frau ohne Schatten , Ariadne auf Naxos , Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro , Die Zauberflöte ) she recorded some works by J. S. Bachs in the early 1950s, such as the Magnificat (conductor Felix Prohaska , Mimi Coertse , Hilde Rössel-Majdan, Anton Dermota , Frederic Guthrie, LP: Bach Guild, CD: Vanguard OVC 2010) or, under the direction of Hermann Scherchen , who was known at the time as a connoisseur of New Music , the cantatas for alto voices, such as Schlage yes, desired hour (BWV 53) and resist sin (BWV 54). She also took part twice in the sound recordings of the St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) (under Hermann Scherchen and Mogens Wöldike ).
