The Hintere Brochkogel (formerly also called Pröchkogel ) is at 3623  m above sea level. A. (also 3624  m , 3635  m and 3628  m ) the third highest mountain in the Weißkamm of the Ötztal Alps , in the Austrian state of Tyrol . Its summit point is hidden under firn even in summer . It has the shape of a flat pyramid that sends pronounced ridges to the north, south-east and south-west. The mountain can be reached from the Breslauer Hütte and is considered a shorter alternative to the Wildspitze . The first ascent of the mountain documented by sources took place on August 2, 1858 by Albert Wachtler, later chairman of the Bozen section of the DOeAV . It was led by Leander Klotz from Vent .

Location and surroundings

The mountain is a good eight kilometers as the crow flies south-southwest of Mittelberg in the Pitztal . Neighboring peaks are in the east, separated by the Mitterkarjoch ( 3468  m ), the Wildspitze with 3772 meters, in the south, separated by the Vernagtjoch ( 3400  m ), the 3565 meter high Vordere Brochkogel and in the west, separated by the Brochkogeljoch ( 3423  m ), the Petersenspitze at 3484 meters. The Hintere Brochkogel is completely surrounded by glaciers . In the north is the nutrient area of the Taschachferner , in the southeast of the Mitterkarferner and in the southwest of the Hochvernagtferner . The mountaineering village of Vent is a good five kilometers away in a south-easterly direction.

Base and ascent

In the middle of the 19th century, the mountain guide Leander Klotz from Vent offered paying tourists mountain trips to the glaciers and peaks of the area and recommended the Hinteren Brochkogel as an alternative to the much more difficult to climb neighboring Wildspitze to anyone he could not accurately assess. The normal route , the easiest ascent, to the Hinteren Brochkogel leads as a high tour with appropriate equipment over the south ridge . The starting point is the Breslauer Hütte at an altitude of 2,844 meters . From the hut the path runs in a north-westerly direction on a stone dove path to the Mitterkarferner, and then to the Mitterkarjoch on the uppermost part of the Taschachferner. Then the path continues in a westerly direction over the Taschachfirn to the rocky approach of the southeast ridge over rubble and in easy fracture climbing to the summit. According to the literature, the walking time is around 3½ hours. Other bases are the Taschachhaus ( 2434  m ), the Vernagthütte ( 2766  m ) and the Braunschweiger Hut at 2759 meters.
